View Full Version : Okay Strong Owners
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 10:49 AM now I don't obviously have the purse strings that some of you fellers do. In fact I only own 1 road/track/cross bike with a 1.125 headset and most of my projects are Frankenbikes. Anyhow a teammate sold me his 99 Strong (just my size-Foco Tubing) for a song. don't ask, it's truly painfully cheap. So anyhow I'm gonna build her up at some point and I'm thinking of repainting. So I also am no fan of his DT labels so I made my own hand doing some very Merckxian letters. If I could just get one color of his logo like on his webstite I'd be stoked but these will also do. Anyhow I've come up with 2 schemes. First I'll show the original. then scheme 1 is based on the old 60's Gulf Racing Colors (kinda antiMerckx) the second is a simplified version of the Domo Farm Frites livery.
So tell me which does ya'll like (again I'm poor so I may wind up going with the least expensive)
thx I appreciate the opinions.

physasst 11-19-2006, 10:59 AM for me, I like the first...with the Blue/Black fade....But I am a two color fan on bikes...if it starts to get too much color it gets too busy and I don't like it then. I do like that first paint scheme though.
ChuckUni 11-19-2006, 11:03 AM I like the second orange paneled one but the text needs some kinda rework to make it work better.
Len J 11-19-2006, 11:27 AM Red Blue fade........Much nicer than the other 2
Len
wayneanneli 11-19-2006, 11:42 AM I really like the first one, classic black and blue.
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 12:47 PM Red Blue fade........Much nicer than the other 2
Len
is its present paintjob. would be cheapest to just leave as such.
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 01:02 PM spray fade. makes kinda a glow, if ya look at the Domo Farm Frites Team Bikes, you'll see what it looks like, I'm just not going to do the yellow and red details.
toomanybikes 11-19-2006, 01:08 PM I think you know what my preference would be ...........
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 01:21 PM do the fade (like your CF chain and seat stayes) and do a orange blue treatment.
I just wanna fit in when I come up there ;oP
ps nice bike

That one is actually Randy's. I think the one he is doing for Ron is going to be similar striping etc, but 7-11 colours.
Cool.
SDizzle 11-19-2006, 02:04 PM Definitely this one:

I probblee wouldn't pay too much extra to have the BB threads painted blue, but I'm a miser. Also, get a steel fork for that thing. Good luck!
terry b 11-19-2006, 03:12 PM Mittle one, fer shure.
rufus 11-19-2006, 03:36 PM i like the Blue/black fade, but with the original Strong decals. and i usually don't care for them either, but like it more than your other two designs.
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 04:05 PM are knock offs of Eddy Merckx's bubble letters.
if Carl would do a single color decal like his website header

I'd be happy as well

You want this version.
rufus 11-19-2006, 05:07 PM or a panel, like this:

ChuckUni 11-19-2006, 06:08 PM or a panel, like this:

That could look really cool with your orange/blue scheme. I like the colors you chose...it's close to the 60s colors but a tad lighter and not so heavy looking. Modern take on classics.
atpjunkie 11-19-2006, 06:50 PM I don't really want the outlines but could probably make it work.
terry yours with just the outlines and the 953 showing through is just delovely.
I'd do something like that if I had the pipes.
toomanybikes 11-19-2006, 07:03 PM How much would it cost to chrome it??
I vote for the second (middle) one. Instead of having the seatube letters stacking vertically:
C
S
T
R
O
N
G
I think it would look better if the letters were applied as if they were on a horizontal tube. Does that make sense? Something like this:
of the ones you've shown, go with the original color and build it. i like the lemond lettering. either all blue with yellow lettering or red w/yellow lettering but that just my $.02.

Very nice ( and Philippe is starting to P me off!), but completely academic when the Gulf Livery and those colours are the way to go! ;)
atpjunkie 11-20-2006, 07:39 AM a because I'm a domo farm friites fanatic. yes I have both 99-00 and 01-02 team kits 02 Jacket and 3 pairs of frickin socks ferchrissakes
oh and I have a great photo of Johan, Servais and George H all muddied crossing the cobbles of P-R.
second because it is steel in that paintjob
I ride a 60-61 if that was a 59 I'd make it fit.
Phillipe are ya out there? keep an eye out for big steel Merckx's over there, I'll give ya a finders fee. Find me an MXL!!!!!!!
Fivethumbs 11-20-2006, 09:16 AM The black and blue fade looks good because the black in the rear coordinates nicely with the black fork. If you go this route, I would just use Strong's decals. If you want to use the original colors, I think the red needs to fade to blue farther into the frame. Then the fork would need to be painted red too IMHO.

I'm liken it even more.
I've had a Gulf GT40 color scheme on my list for a long, long time. Not yet gotten around to it. Have you seen this one?

SilasCL 11-20-2006, 10:11 AM I prefer the domo style, but just STRONG looks better than CARL STRONG, IMO.

A
R

now that's sweet. but still...............;)
i'd bring the orange a bit further back, and maybe the blue further back into the seat tube and top of the seatstays before fading to black. and then just "Strong" for the decals.
atpjunkie 11-20-2006, 01:24 PM with less black annd more color. I'm getting close I think.

bikenerd 11-21-2006, 01:58 PM d@mn,ATP, if I get a custom frame how much will you charge to design a paint scheme? I pretty much like em all. You can't go wrong with Gulf (or orange in general), and the Domo/Gulf looks excellent. I can't wait to see the final, and the resulting bike.
*warning - thread hijack in progress*
So you're a Domo FF nut too? I am always looking on ebay & elsewhere, but their stuff is getting scarce. Know any secret sources? Doping issues be d@mned, Museeuw is the hardest.
atpjunkie 11-21-2006, 03:32 PM and I won't charge ya an arm and a leg (what I charge my regular clients) unless we go through 500 corrections. the next on is gonna be the shizzle as I feel I'm pretty close

the best one yet....BY FAR.....
ampastoral 11-21-2006, 07:40 PM lookin good atp...the seat tube/stay cluster really pops in this latest incarnation. i think it works teh best cuz where you have the black on the rear triangle is about where the wheel is going to pull focus anyway. most of the chain/seat stay will get swallowed by the spokes. so the subdued black works well. plus, the omission of the lettering on the ST makes for a cleaner look. strong frames rawk, but for some reason seeing "strong" all over the place is a bit off puting. don't ask me why. i think my answer would have to be that it's not a pretty word. okay, nevermind that last bit. essentially, i'm liking the look.....well done.

just maybe a black stripe mirroring the orange ones at the color transition points. and move the decal down a bit so it's not overlapping the orange
all it needs now is a nice steel chromed fork.
Len J 11-22-2006, 07:52 AM I like it..........but

I don't know, I like it...THE ONLY thing I might change is to have a little blue/orange around the dropouts to really balance the whole thing...But that's MY preference...
Dale Brigham 11-22-2006, 08:51 AM I like the orange panels on the sky blue base (sse photo #2 in the OP) much better than any of the fade jobs. It's more classic, in my opinion. I have a Sky Pearl Steelman, and that sky blue color just makes me smile when I look down at the frame.
Let's give proper for the "Gulf" team colors to the real driving force behind them: John Wyer, the team manager. That famous blue/orange livery graced his team's Ford GT-40s, Ford Mirages, Porsche 917s, and likely some other cars I don't recall. ATPJ, if you want to be Steve McQueen in "Le Mans"on a bike, you have to go with the classic sky blue with orange panels.
Dale
atpjunkie 11-22-2006, 05:57 PM so here it is sans black
one with blue rear end one with orange dropouts
yes Dale final color will spec'd as close as gulf as possible. You forgot the Porsche 908(?) but I'm an old GT 40 man. Don't forget the Gulf cars had that heavy black stripe and the orange was tapered wide at the nose to narrow ()which is the homage I'm doing on the frame)

atpjunkie 11-22-2006, 06:16 PM that is the question

i still like the black rear end best, but also still think you need black swooshes to go along with the orange ones. connected at the narrow points, and then spreading apart the wider it gets, with the blue showing between. wish i was good enough with photoshop to alter your pic and show you what i mean. tried, but it just came out crappy.

Nope, better with the Orange.
TACSTS 11-22-2006, 09:01 PM What about orange at the headtube and dropouts, but not at the seattube cluster? Looks too busy or something. I think orange on both ends with blue in the middle would look like a good balance.
It's tricky picking a paint job. I've recently been agonizing over the same thing. I went with flames!

it's what I do for a living. this stuff is actually just goof/slop level for me. it's a multistep process that starts with a clipping path and duping the frame a few times and then I remove all the color and tint variation to them (except the lighting effects) I then use the mask of the frame to do the basic color fills, layer mask the fades and hand draw the fancy stuff. all the while I have a couple layers (one set to color burm, one to multiply, one to screen) of the frame on top that allow me to retain the shape and shading.
so if you saw the color layers they are just flat color with the top layers retaining the 3-Dness and shape. it's the same method for recolorizing, old faded photos or colorizing B&Ws. It's a bit of painting and a bit of proper layer management

ok, way beyond my meager abilities. i've taken a couple adult ed courses in Photoshop, but we just barely got into layer masks and such, and just basic stuff like adding shadows.
clipping paths? wtf???!!! :p and the hand drawing stuff is a weakness too. do you have one of those drawing pad things?
gonna have to pick up the book our instructor recommended, and learn how to do more of this stuff. just wish i had the time.

you can accurately draw around an object to isolate it from the background. I tell ya what, you get say 200 pictures of tennis shoes and clip them all (it's how I learned) for use in adverts.
Hand drawing is my forte, I have a degree in fine arts but work as an illustrator/designer.
No I don't use a Wacom pad, I actually like the mouse. I don't use a pencil when I paint, I don't use a paintbrush grip when I airbrush, different medium, diferent grip, no big deal. alot of artists whine about it, but you hold a paint brush different than a pencil or pen, etc... get frickin' over it ya whingers.
Luckily I don't need more time, I've got over 10 years of 8-14 hr days of it under my belt. Like I said, these are just 'play' they take about 10 minutes (first took about 25 to set up all the layers and paths, and don't even come close to what I'd refer to as 'print quality'.

il sogno 11-23-2006, 12:26 PM You're not going to have "STRONG" on the seat tube?
I like #1 and #2 in this latest panel. Mainly cause I like the Merckx paint scheme you are going for.
rufus 11-23-2006, 02:54 PM #2. as you say, the black makes it look mean.
still think you need black stripes too though, it fits the merckx scheme you got going.
dekindy 11-23-2006, 04:40 PM How about #2 above with some orange treatment around the bottom bracket and rear dropout? Otherwise, I like #2 and #4 as is.
atpjunkie 11-23-2006, 07:06 PM it gets too Halloweeny. Orange and blue are complimentary colors. they make each other pop. the black just adds some visual weight and makes the bike 'not so bright' but ya don't wanna dump color on it as it loses some of it's pizzazz
toomanybikes 11-23-2006, 07:17 PM See, this is the sort of Randy always says to me and I nod and pretend I understand.
You should shoot the pictures to him and ask him what he thinks.
TACSTS 11-23-2006, 09:44 PM I like the one with orange at the dropouts and the headtube. They could maybe go further out the tubes a bit for some more orange-ness. Maybe have fork painted orange to match?
but that darn black triangle just makes it look mean
still debating
Thats my favourite.
mprevost 11-24-2006, 05:22 AM If you are not going to paint the fork, leave some black on the back end. It sort of balances it out. If you paint the fork, maybe then you can remove the black. Really...all of those choices are beautiful. But...with a black fork, leaving a little black in there balances things out a bit. Besides...as you said...black is a little meaner looking.

Perfection!

Just Do It! Get ur done!
Fivethumbs 11-24-2006, 04:06 PM The fade at the rear triangle doesn't look right to me. Probably because all the other areas where there is a color change there is a distinct line.
atpjunkie 11-24-2006, 04:50 PM are used all the time in bike painting. I can think of numerous ones just off the top of my head. I can't fade orange into blue, complimentary colors don't fade without making mud and having them placed next to each other with distinct breaks makes it really pop. I could do black edge work but it would look to goth. see rufus' sample of what the hard black looks like on the blue, it's almost too much.
JoeLeeJr@yahoo.com 11-25-2006, 01:21 PM Maybe it's just me - the black fork needs SOMETHING .. "Strong" in orange or blue? A paint band at least? Too, the white STRONG logos are pretty huge and jarringly white. I love the latest iteration of the black CS's though!
PS I always wanted to paint my race car in the Gulf livery!
dekindy 11-26-2006, 04:45 AM I don't know, I like it...THE ONLY thing I might change is to have a little blue/orange around the dropouts to really balance the whole thing...But that's MY preference...
+1 leaning toward no more change. I think the comment about the black triangle and the rear wheel probably is correct. You last version is a winner!
Picshooter 11-26-2006, 07:00 AM I like the last one. What about a head badge?
physasst 11-26-2006, 10:32 AM I like the last one. What about a head badge?
I agree, ATP, you should contact Carl and get one of his new headbadge stickers, those things are COOL......
atpjunkie 11-27-2006, 07:25 AM and they do Strongs bikes, yes it will have new stickering. Stickers on Mock up may not be to scale, I'm guessing at sizing. I'm not gonna get the head badge (out of my budget) but it will have the new HT sticker.
TACSTS 11-27-2006, 10:14 AM The fade in the rear still doesn't look right to me. It it were just a two or three color fade, then okay, but with taped off elements on the front of the bike, it sort of ends up looking unfinished with the fade to black in the back. Kinda like, "did you run out of paint?" I dunno, just my opinion. I guess it's just me, still looks sweet either way. :)
atpjunkie 11-27-2006, 01:18 PM Team SC in Domo Farm Frites livery. Pinarellos from the late 90's earl 00s, Ridleys, etc.. it was quite common to combine both fades and hard edges. Since the bike is from that era and since I'm a Domo FF nut (but one who loves orange and Gulf livery) I'm thinking of what I'm doing. You never know, I may go black free still.
TACSTS 11-27-2006, 03:31 PM Is this the right bike? (cool pic of King Eddy even if it isn't)

handsomerob 11-27-2006, 07:59 PM and sogno here it is with ST stckering. I also reduced the black a bit on the ST and Seat stays

ATP.... this one will look KILLER with some Campagnolo Zondas or some other black wheelset.... It looks great as a frameset, but built this one will really take the cake. Nice!!

atp don't do fancy wheels

and atp tends to flex the Ti. atp has a friend who sells moots. atp says 'please send donations to Rose Canyon Bicycles, owner Ron Lacey titled 'buy atp a Moots fund'
thanx, your generous donations will be appreciated.
My teammate sold me this Strong with Fork and King Headset for $150. I got some free Record Shifters, Rear Der. (THX KP) and swapped/extra parts binned my way for most of the rest of this build. I've done this so cheaply it's the only reason I can think of repainting. I just don't have the budet of some of you superstars.
again I own 1 non MTB (that's road, track and cx bikes) with a 1.125 headset. New Bike to me is 2003.

I can sympatize......with the new house thing LOOMING on the horizon, and a 7 month old. I can't afford a Zank or Strong or anything new really. Most of my future bike buys will be Ebay used steel/ti, or something new like a Gunnar or Salsa La Raza...and then build with shim 9 speed. Still hope to eventually have a nice stable, but the disposable income is not real big at the moment. :D
toomanybikes 11-29-2006, 01:00 PM Hey I like the vintage steel stuff and find lots of nice stuff on ebay. It's mostly pretty cheap too.
ATP knows the story, it's a bit of a game for me, much as I love the frames and bikes I really like to try and get 'em cheap or even better get them real cheap and then fix them up - get a whole new bike for likel $400 - $500.
I would love to do something like a custom Strong - but I just don't know. I was gonna talk to the Eddy distributor and see if I can swing a deal on a Merckx CX bike.
Luckily, my past life has set me up pretty well, but mainly the kids are grown a bit too. Makes a difference.

I make pretty good coin, but it does make a difference on where you are on the curve. We've only been married 3 and half years, and I'm still in the building process with new houses, new kids, new college savings account, upping my retirement funds...etc.etc.etc......I'm sure that in 10 years or so, I will be in a better position to buy nice custom beauties like Terry's, BUT until then..I can amass a real nice collection of steel bikes along the lines of used Waterford's. New Gunnars and Salsa's and used nags and Merckx's.......That's just the way it is.

you need to listen to your bikes my friend that Curtlo wants a Strong CX not a Merckx CX, you've already got Eddy bikes. All you need to do is close the Ebay purchases for a little while and you'll have the Strong......:D

I'd love a Big leg Emma, you got some taste ATP, and you race cross too, which IMHO gives you extry credit!

I'm no TerryB, there is only one of those. But I got the wants just like Terry, just not the purse strings. But since you asked:
My mtn bike is a Trek 9.8 elite
One Dean Custom Ti Road
One Strong Custom Steel CX
One Moots Compact SL 6/4
One Independent Fab Custom steel CX
One Moots Psychlo CX (in progress)
and I'm waiting very patiently for my Vanilla to arrive...:cryin:
On my short list: DeSalvo custom Steel, and a Alum Rock Lobster CX
on my medium list: Strong 953, and Jim Kish and a lugged Zank CX
on my long list: a Ti planet x to go with my steel one and a Titus Exogrid.

atpjunkie 11-29-2006, 04:44 PM Tribal Partnerships, personality conflicts that have no place in the business world becoming policy makers. Take a company pulling $3 million a year and growing almost expnentially and the ran it into the ground cause 2 guys on council didn't like each other and one guy decided if if FF'd this project it would make the other guy look bad.

I understand all that stuff in spades - doing what I do and doing it in BC, I see this all the time.
We wound down a whole tribal council this year - what a freaking mess .. for all the reasons you have said.
Are you still in the same place as last spring or has that gone?

more in central SD. Commute is now 45 minutes by bike, 10-15 by car. Not next to CyclArt anymore, sniff, though they did hook me with the pass to Interbike.
can ya believe that stuff?
We even went and found a buyer for the project (Canadian First Nations Tribe) and the partners took it to Tribal Council, took a week or 2. said okay. Then it went to general coucil, another couple weeks and then to a tribal vote for another couple. By the time they said yes it was 6 polus weeks later and the new partner went for another venture thinking they weren't interested in the deal.
My Boss stormed in "Phuckin' Indians I hate em" and he is one. (just not on a Casino payroll) Lotsa jokes about "No wonder the white man took over. By the time the plains indians finally came to an agreement white man was all the way to California"
sad, really sad. but so is life. Hopefully it can have some sort of rebirth. The line was doing well, just alot of outside BS dragged her down.

Sorry to hear that, I thought that was a promising business, good ideas.
Fzck, I wish I had known at the time, might have been saveable.
Politics ruins most things.
