What do you use on the cotton balls in the nose? I was told once, but forgot. I picked up an Olbas inhaler, but would like to try the cotton ball trick.

Thanks

Best method: And this applies to cold weather racing only really as restriction of breathing passages is not usually an issue in warmer climates and not recommended for casual riding as its a bit harsh on the old snoz.
Firstly warm up well 30 mins increasing tempo etc.
Apply oil to a hankerchief, do not soak just a few drops and inhale deeply several times. This really opens up the tubes.
Then apply oil (from hankerchief or a drop or two) to your jersey collar, and a little dab on back of your gloves/mitts. This will keep the vapour close enough to work but not too close to interfere with breathing (as too much can really take your breath away).
And when your nose runs or you feel a little sluggish wipe your gloved hand under your nose, hey presto an instant little pick me up.

I only ever use this for cold CXes or early season crits/timetrials when a hard fast start is imperritive.
Disclaimer - of course if this doesnt work and you cant smell anything after this seek an ENT specialist a.s.a.p

OOh nearly forgot, oil of your choice, I prefer olbas, peppermint makes me gag, wintergreen is also good. I find inhalers too harsh.

I've got a bag of Eucalyptus throat lozenges in my race bag and (when I remember) will pop one in my mouth an hour or so before a cold race.

Cheers!
