I currently have a 105 chain that came with the 105 group.Does anyone have experience or opinions on upgrading the chain to the SRAM 89-R ? I have read some mixed reviews on the chain and want some more current feedback. Will it improve shifting and run quieter?Any opinions welcome.Thanks.

I run the same chain on an otherwise Shimano drivetrain on one bike and everything works fine. Most will say that the Shimano chains shift better and are a bit quieter due to the bulged side plates.
In any case, I went with SRAM years ago because of the powerlink and continue to use them. But, if the LBS is out of SRAM chains, I wouldn't hesitate to get a shimano chain and a powerlink - that combo works fine too.
I just got a used bike with a Shimano chain and a SRAM 9 speed cassette on it - shifts like butter and is very quiet. If I ever get the bikes in the same place I plan to switch wheels and see if the SRAM chain/cassette combo works any better than the SRAM chain on a Shimano cassette. I'm thinking that the difference would be so slight I won't notice.

I use a D.A. chain (D.A. cassette) on my Shimano bike, seems to work fine. I kinda think the Shimano stuff works best with Shimano drivelines, I have a Wipperman on my Campy bike but a Wipp. on my D.A. bike did not work for beans. The D.A. chains are not that expensive. I have no experience with Sram chains...

I just replaced my DuraAce chain with an 89-R and I can't say there is a huge difference. If anything, the SRAM chain is running quieter and shifting better, but I think this has to do more with the fact that the Shimano chain was getting worn/stretched.

When Shimano went to that replaceable pin (haven't used one in so long I forget what it's called), I switched to SRAM on all my bikes next time I bought chains. I can't tell any difference in performance, and I can install and remove them without tools.
