View Full Version : Puerto Vallarta Mt. Biking
chadjodi 01-02-2007, 07:47 PM I am looking for information on places to ride, group rides, safety concerns, etc.
We will be there in early Feb 07 and I am deciding whether to bring a bike or not.
Does anyone know where to find information on the area, my spanish skills are minimal.
Bertleman 01-03-2007, 07:55 AM I found this, but I can't vouch for it.

I would try to rent a bike as you will get charged an arm and a leg trying to bring your bike on the plane.
I've been to PV a half dozen times and I get charged $50 to bring my surfboard back but never to bring it down.
Sheesh 01-03-2007, 08:24 AM We were just in Puerto Vallarta at the beginning of December and signed up for a MTB trip through Outdoor Vallarta (http://www.outdoorvallarta.com/). Alex, the owner, was awesome! I'm not a mountain biker, so he took us on a very easy ride through the valley but he pointed out some pretty amazing rides that were way too technical for me. I'd recommend sending him an email and hooking up with him for one day and then once you are familiar with the area, you could head out on your own. You can also rent bikes through him - he owns a local shop.
If you want more info about PV in general, feel free to pm me. We've been there three times and absolutely LOVE it!
wheelio 01-03-2007, 09:01 AM I wouldnt count on finding a decent rental in P.V. Check out bikemex there in the old part of town, if there still there. some real klunkers for rent .I was glad I took my own bike, even though it cost me 150.00 to ship it down .If you travel alot like I do you might consider a break down bike which I now have .it fits into an airline approved size suitcase .no extra charges. Theres lots of gravel roads on the coast ,the main coastal highway is downright scary, very curvey with no shoulders .
If you head east into the coastal hills you will find some very nice quiet and senic rides . perfect for a cyclocross bike or something with some beefier rubber.
Checkout curtlo.com or Tom Ritcheys web site if your interesed in a breakdown bike .Hope this helps .
Not sure if there is single track, but we stayed on a sick hill in Syulita (about 40 miles north of PV). The dirt roads around that town are challenging enough for most mountain bikers, and even though I surf on my Mexican trips, the mornings would have been great for mountain biking (I missed my bike more than a few times). Once you get there you will understand, get up and ride with the sun, as the rest of the day is way too hot for cycling...........MTT:thumbsup:
