The fixie has chorus calipers (that's what I had on the bike before the conversion) and the cross bike has xtr cantis. Neither is "official" as the commuter, but I tend to ride the fixie to work more often. For that matter, on occasion I'll take out the gearie, which has record calipers.

Currently rollercams. My other commuter bike is awaiting some TLC, but runs cantis.

When I was commuting on the Soma ES, I used tektro long reach with Koolstop pads and they were more than adequate. My Gunnar Crosshairs has Avid Shorty Six cantilevers and three months later I have finally found the non-squealing sweet spot. To be fair, my front rim is approaching it's end of life due to wear so getting the flat brake pad to seat on a concave surface was tough. My backup commuter is my 29r MTB and it has Hayes disc brakes.

What brakes are you running on your commuter?Cane Creek SCX-5s cantis that came on the bike. I am impressed. I upgraded to the Kool-Stop salmon/black dual compound. They need to be pulled in a bit. Still taking time to bring'er down. :)

As I use 'crossers for commuting, I run cantis (Shimano XT on the Major Jake and Avid Shorty 10s on Axis #2).

Cheap Tektro cantis with Koolstop pads. I hated the cantis and was ready to find something else until I mounted the Koolstops. Those pads made a huge difference. The OEM Tektro pads were all noise and no friction.

Last generation before V-brakes. Using salmon Kool Stop pads. The rear still squeaks, but it might be the ALEX rim that came with my Surly X-check.

Tektro Silver sidepulls, on my Bleriot. They make the Shimanos on my Specialized Roubaix look like toys, and those are some nice brakes!

Well, depends. On the Cross Check I'm using Paul Touring Canti's, which are incredible with Kool Stop pads. Solid brakes in any conditions. However, I've been riding fixed more and more lately with a Shimano A550 caliper brake on the front. Don't use the break a bunch on the fixed gear, but it's there when I need it.

My commuter is a steel framed Miyata mtb circa 1988 that I converted the front brake to disc. No matter what I tried with my particular Sun Rhynolite rim, I could never completely get rid of brake squeal with different vbrakes, or three different koolstop pads (black, red, salmon), so I changed the front fork to a 700C carbon cross fork from Nashbar with an Avid BB7 disc. This setup has been great but looks a little odd with a 26" rim even thought the fork rake and opening height was almost exactly the original dimensions(so my frame geometry and standover height was maintained). I think it is the absence of any brake hardware at the top of the fork makes it look bare! I also do a lot of climbing and in long descents, cantis and v-brakes get a bit toasty, I've had aluminum flake off my rims from the heat. My rear brake is other: a U-brake, that for a short period of time was being used for MTB of that era and is one strong brake as well.
