I know asking this question opens me up to puns from the wise guys :blush2: but I still want to know. I switched the supplement I use in my bottle from Cytomax to Revenge Pro, nothing wrong with Cytomax, just wanted to try something different. Anyway I continue to have gas which I attribute to using both these products. During a ride I burp regularly while drinking the “mix” anyone else? Is there a product that does NOT cause this effect?

Make sure the product does not have protein. I find I cannot tolerate it well myself on the bike. I have had good luck with First Endurance E3 myself.

The powdered mixes from Hammer Gel do that to me... forget what they're called, Ultra Endurance or something like that, and Perpetual or something. Both contain protein (not sure if that's the cause, but seems logical) and both give me mjaor gas.

Like mentioned above, it is the protein that will do it. I had the same problem with Endurox (has protein) and have switched to Cliff Shot Electrolyte (no protein) drink--love it.

It sounds like your drink powder is getting its revenge.

I'm sorry...just couldn't resist. :p

The few times I have used Revenge it's caused stomach problems.

I currently use the Powerbar stuff, or Hammer's HEED (which doesn't contain any protein). The Powerbar drink tastes better; HEED has more calories.

Jet propulsion was banned by the UCI years ago after they discovered it was the key to all of Eddie M's victories (so, so very sorry, Eddie).

You could try adding Beeno or GasX to the drink to see if they help. Also, you could just be drinking it too fast and swallowing a lot of air.

I like Hammer products, but so far I've only used Recoverite (and the gel). I saw elsewhere in the thread somebody had the same trouble with HEED, but your mileage may vary. I find Recoverite to be useful as a pre/during exercise drink, but usually just stick to it for recovery. Hammer, naturally, recommends HEED for workouts.

It seems to vary by person. All the guys above are citing protein, but Gatorade (no protein) gives me gas and Accelerade (protein) doesn't. You'll likely just have to experiment until you find the right solution.

Having done a lot of doubles and longer, where nutrition is vital, I've tried just about everything every which way. One problem I've found is that consuming too much carb, in any form, too fast can cause gas and the runs. See this and other articles at Hammer: http://www.e-caps.com/za/ECP?PAGE=ARTICLE&ARTICLE.ID=1273&OMI=10126,10071&AMI=10126&RETURN_URL=%2Fza%2FECP%3FPAGE%3DTRAININGTIPS%26OMI %3D10126%2C10071%26AMI%3D10126&RETURN_TEXT=Performance%20Tips''

I've had this happen many times. I think to myself that I'm riding hard, or I got behind on fuel, so I up the dosage. Or, I just don't keep track, and get too much. Never works. Your system can only absorb so much carb so fast, and if you try to exceed that rate, even if you are already in deficit, the undigested carbs will enter your lower intestines and cause gas; it will also draw water out of your blood, which enters the intestines and gives you the runs. It's really worse than bonking.

Try sticking to no more than 300 carb calories per hour, and see what happens.

just a thought -- when you ride, I've heard that you swallow all kinds of air, that the air you swallow ends up going out, you know, the other end, and that this can account for gassiness.

Thanks for the advice and heads up. I'd never heard that before. One thing I don't have in my seat bag is toilet paper, and something tells me the spare tube just wouldn't be the same. The article is impressive. I've been to the Hammer site several times but never seen it- love their Recoverite and Endurolyte powder.
