If so, where can I purchase one? voila! http://store.theworstpageintheuniverse.com/ Find the article that goes with it. Genius. GScot 01-12-2007, 12:40 PM Brilliant! I used to be subjected to several of those vegetarian jerks who like to moralize and insist on going to 'Life Friendly' as they put it restaurants. Bringing a pocket full of jerky is a successful strategy for making an ass of yourself and pissing them off. Creatively adding meat to normally vegetable dishes at potlucks is also fun. Grilled summer squash with meatballs actually turned out to be good and bacon can be added to anything. innergel 01-12-2007, 01:42 PM Here's the accompanying article. I love Maddox. http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=sponsor There is a woman on my team at work that has turned vegetarian on us. She used to just be an annoying member of PETA, a terrorist organization, but now she won't eat meat. She "refuses to support that industry", whatever the hell that means. She wears leather shoes and a leather belt every day though. But I digress. I asked her what her husband thought about her being vegetarian. She said that since she does the cooking that she was refusing to cook meat for him either. So he's now a defacto vegetarian too, at least at home. I love my wife, but that crap wouldn't fly with me. The best part about working with her is that I love hunting. She knows it and can't stand it. We've gotten into it before. The new President of our division found out that I hunt, he's a big bird hunter, so he's at my desk after every weekend during hunting season asking me how it went and looking at pictures etc. Invariably we sit together at group meals where the hunting talk starts up again. The woman just sits in her chair seething the whole time. I freaking LOVE it. When the season was over last year, she thought she heard the end of it. Turns out two of our directors are big fishermen and then the fishing talk started. Yippee! Greatness. Whew! Rant over. I get kind of worked up over this subject. GScot, bacon does rule! dr hoo 01-12-2007, 01:55 PM Creatively adding meat to normally vegetable dishes at potlucks is also fun. Two words: panna cotta. Does not work with vegans because of the cream, but the gelatin..... And saying "Honey, was that the soy bacon, because this tastes like you used the other container." Not that I would ever do anything so crass. BTW, bacon is the thing most likely to make a vegetarian break, even after years and years of not giving in. Mmmmmmm, bacon! I can groove with not wanting to support the factory meat industry. We get our meat from local (as local as possible) range fed sources. Anyway, hunting is totally compatible with not wanting to support factory meat. I am seriously considering taking up hunting so that I can supplement out meat with game. yarble 01-12-2007, 02:33 PM why the hell would you want to put meat in a dish meant for people who dont eat meat? if someone did that to me i would punch them in the mouth. dr hoo 01-12-2007, 02:52 PM why the hell would you want to put meat in a dish meant for people who dont eat meat? if someone did that to me i would punch them in the mouth. Why should anyone fear your weak little vegetarian punches? Seriously though, I would never do such a thing. But certain moralizing people have made me consider doing so on one or two occasions. Certain people of all persuasions have made me consider doing very bad things to them on occasion.. When people come over to eat, I always ask about dietary considerations, then do whatever I can to accomodate them. No meat for vegetarians, no peanuts for allergic, no brocolli for president Bush the first, etc, SilasCL 01-12-2007, 03:07 PM Why should anyone fear your weak little vegetarian punches? I probably wouldn't invite vegans to eat my cooking...not worth the pain for either of us. toomanybikes 01-12-2007, 03:12 PM As a bonus, cooking for vegetarians cuts the dinner party budget in half. And in my experience vegetarians drink more - helps them offset the pain of what they are missing :p dr hoo 01-12-2007, 03:12 PM I probably wouldn't invite vegans to eat my cooking...not worth the pain for either of us. I would, once. I have before, because I ask people before knowing about what they will or will not eat. But you are right, it does take some thinking and effort to get away from any animal products whatsoever... and make it satisfy all involved. SilasCL 01-12-2007, 03:20 PM How on earth does that math work when 90% of the cost is booze anyway?? And in my experience vegetarians drink more - helps them offset the pain of what they are missing :p For your first question, when people come to my house to eat, I ask them to bring the booze :) As for your second line, LOL SilasCL 01-12-2007, 03:25 PM I would, once. Yes, I can't think of a single dish I cook with no animal products... I don't have the cooking range (yes pun intended...) that you do Dr. and I'm pretty sure I would disappoint the palates and GI tracts of all the guests. dr hoo 01-12-2007, 04:16 PM Yes, I can't think of a single dish I cook with no animal products... My go to is roasted or grilled vegetables and cous cous (made with veg stock). Some big portabellas with olive oil give some meaty texture to it, and lots of fresh herbs and nuts for texture. Mediterranean influenced for herbs and spices. Maybe a miso based soup with rice noodles to start. A tofu/fruit based desert of some kind in parfait form. But you can make any pastry with vegetable shortening if you want something a bit heavier for afters (or pastry based appetizers). Onion tart perhaps. Plus I have a vegetarian cookbook for other ideas. But the above works pretty much any time of the year. snapdragen 01-12-2007, 04:44 PM My niece's last boyfriend was vegan. When I knew he was coming for Thanksgiving, I made sure to make a couple of dishes I knew he could eat. Bless his heart, he showed up with the most amazing roasted vegetable dish. The entire family loved it. Bocephus Jones II 01-12-2007, 04:47 PM Yes, I can't think of a single dish I cook with no animal products... I also get a kick out of how some people don't consider fish "meat." Bocephus Jones II 01-12-2007, 04:48 PM My niece's last boyfriend was vegan. If you are a true vegan and not just lacto-ovo you become a good cook or you starve--or you move to Boulder or San Fran where that kind of food is common. snapdragen 01-12-2007, 04:51 PM If you are a true vegan and not just lacto-ovo you become a good cook or you starve--or you move to Boulder or San Fran where that kind of food is common. He does live in San Francisco, and is an excellent cook. He and his brothers love to compete with each other and show off their cooking skills. The whole friggin point is that the dish wasn't meant for people who don't eat meat. If a meatball sneaks past your meat detector... The point isn't to fool anyone it's to irritate and not cater to these moralizing dumbasses. |
