the pedal eye of this crank snapped during a sprint and I hit the frame hard enough to bend it, and hit the ground so hard I didn't slide....no permanent damage to me but wanted to warn others fixing old bikes, I found out after the fact that these were known to be fragile back in the day....

Ouch! I've always been weary of using any of the Record fluted cranks for the same reason... 20 + years of wear might be catching up stuff.
Heal fast. Are you going to repair the frame or make it a wall hanging?

Ouch. Yeah, had a few sets of those in the 80s. Actually just gave away a set of those to a friend. I'm gonna e-mail him that photo as a warning to be careful. I'm a little sketched by the Super Record cranks I have on another bike, too.

That is indeed an old Trek, bought it new way back in the '80's, eventually set it up for loaded touring....after many miles the lower head lug cracked, Trek honored their warranty and brazed a new one in and repainted....later I made a fixed gear out of it using the crank shown. Anyway, after all that I've decided to retire it and it will be reincarnated as rebar... The crash was awhile back and I healed OK, finally posted this after cleaning out my garage...
