A Surly Cross-Check fork was installed, and Sun CR18 wheelset, giving the rim width and clearance for a Panaracer Fire Cross, 45mm wide, and leave mud clearance, but the inside casing is at best a true 38 mm in air volume. 10mm rise in height on the front, due to 400 mm axel to crown on the Surly. Not enough to notice really.
I have used WTB Interwolfs. In air volume the 38 mm WTB Interwolf's, are 35mm wide, tall in profile, and were good on the CR 14 rims, but had to be run at 50 lbs to avoid risking pinch flats on the rear tire. The Panaracer can be run at 40lbs on the front. I weigh 186 lbs. The Panaracer is not a fast rolliing tire, but it does not give up in sand over hard surface without warning you. The Interwolfs were quite good as a cross tire, but the front would get loose in sand off camber. I was running it perhaps beyond its design.
Working so far, bike on trail is more stable. On One Midge bars, on the new fork, set higher using the old brake setup is more useful on trail to use the drops more than the origonal bars.
I can recommend the WTB's, I rode them on trail for three months. Still like them. Fast tires, good on transtions from road to trail, tough tires.
I was able to get a Michelin Transworld Sprint on the back, which is a true 40mm wide and TALL, and this is the issue in the rear, if the tire is 35mm tall, it can be 40mm wide nob to nob, but if its a true 40mm its close. I had to shave the nobs. Best way to take the outside edge of nobs down is medium sand paper, good quailty on a sanding block. Cutting them off is a good way to ruin the tire if you slip. I have about 2mm of mud clearance. Not so good, but the air volume lets me run it over rough single track at 42lbs
The chain stays in the back on the X Ray will take a true 38mm wide and tall, with the right amount of mud clearance. I have mixed feelings about the Transworld Sprint, and wonder if any of you out there, have found other larger tires than 35mm for the rear of the Sport, that fit, Tire size and profiles are real voodoo. Its more the true measurement of the tires, height and width, than the listed tire size. I can tell you the Sprint is a tight fit, at a dead on true 40x40 mm.
Nothing wrong with the stock fork, but it likes a true 35mm tire. I guess, the bike is a Monster Cross lite, now, but its still an Ibex.
Anyone have any ideas on other tires, for the rear of the bike? Mixed riding, technical trail, rough fire roads, some asphalt? True sizes?
