6/16 - The Great Carroll County Cycling Event
There is one in each of the Fall Series (Final Event & Fall Fling) in Sept-Oct

http://www.ambikerace.com/2007/calendar_07.htm

Many of the WISport races are road.

http://www.wisport.org/Wisport07schedule.html

A couple of the WCA races are road.

http://www.wicycling.org/WisconsinCup/roadSchedule.htm (2006 schedule)

There are usually a couple around Springfield (Loami & Athens??)

Superweek has two road races.

The Wisport races are open events and very dodgy not to mention short.

I did the Pedal for Proceeds in Whitewater last year. Large field, no categories by experience or speed. There were quite a few crashes some of which were quite bad.

That said they use chip timing and results are published promptly.

In June there is a very good road race in Whitewater. Great roads. It is typically the day after the Whitewater Crit.

Alpine Valley during Superweek is a very popular and the caliber of racing is supposed to be quite hot. Last year there was also a roadrace out of Holy Hill.

Of all of the ones mentioned I believe that Carroll county is the only Point to Point race. Some please correct me if I am wrong.

Carol County is 1 x ~65 mile lap.

True about WISport, but I am rather partial to last year's Pedal for Proceeds since that is my only road win.

I think its a little unfair to catogorize an entire racing organization based on limited experience, especially in regards to Pedal for Proceeds in Whitewater. Any flat race is bound to be dodgy since there is no chance to break up the pack. Most of the time all it takes is the actions of one rider to create a problem for many people.

Accidents happen in USCF, too. There may be less accidents in USCF races, but it seems like there are more TTs and crits than there are road races. Outside of Whitewater, the Firehouse 50 was the only race where there was need of medical assistance besides basic first aid. In the case of the Firehouse 50, it's hard not to have issues when there were over 500 participants in the road races alone. Overall, considering there were 18 road races on Wisport's schedule last year, more this year, that's a pretty good record.

Wisport is a citizen's racing series, the only one of its kind--a good place for people who don't want to be separated by gender, age, or ability. Let's face it: accidents happen at all racing levels, for a variety of reasons. No one likes them, or wants them to happen. But, they are the risk everyone takes when deciding to do a race.

Point well taken regarding Wisport. I've only done the Pedal for Proceeds and I'm sure that based on the series success would not want to extrapolate the same across all events.

Of course there are crashes in USCF or ABR races but you aren't going to be in a massive start including people on mountain bikes, fixed gear bikes, cross bikes, touring bikes and so forth. So all I would say is "caveat emptor".

One thing to add about Carroll County- a couple of our elite guys went out for that race last year. Perhaps best summed up as "How often do you get the chance to ride 65 miles in two hours?". He loved the race and we are making the race a top objective this year.

"...including people on mountain bikes, fixed gear bikes, cross bikes, touring bikes and so forth."

Don't forget the tandems. Seeing a tandem going sideways, brakes locked up, in a pack of 150 bikes is a picture my mind will never forget.

To all who have never raced the Hillsborough-Roubaix. I have raced this event 4 X and it is w/o a doubt one of the best races. I live in MO and travel to this event every year. The town itself comes out in full force, its a really cool sight to behold. The course itself is excellent w/ rolling terrain and a few decent hills. Most of the course is on back woods farm roads. The last stretch back into town (the start/finish line) is on pretty rough cobblestones. Lots of fun, don't miss it.

I think calling them cobblestones is wishful thinking. Aren't they actually bricks? Can't argue one iota with anything else you said. It is a great race regardless of what you call the road surface.

What we call cobblestones in English is actually "pave" in Europe which are cut stones (i.e. squared off). True cobbles are technically round river stones and are true murder to ride on- especially when wet.
