I started using Speedplay X/2 pedals about 6 months ago and haven't had any problems with hot spots until this past week. (prior to this, I used Look PP206 pedals for approx one year with no problems)
This past Saturday, my left foot developed a painful hot spot directly above the pedal about 40 miles into my ride. At mile 50, I had to take my shoe off & rub the bottom of my foot to relieve the pain in order to finish the ride. I was wearing my 1½-month-old Specialized Carbon road shoes. Today, after about 15-20 minutes on the rollers with a different bike and set of X/2 pedals and wearing my older Sidi G4 shoes, I started getting a hot spot in the same spot on my left foot. (I took Sunday off and did a 2 hr mtb ride yesterday with no foot pain.)
I'm trying to figure out what could be the reason(s) for getting these hot spots now, on my left foot only, after previously riding X/2 pedals for 6 months without even a hint of pain. Cleat placement hasn't changed. It's now happened with both of my shoes, so I can't put the blame on either one shoe or the other, unless my left foot doesn't like switching back & forth between the Specialzied BG insole and the stock Sidi.
Any input as to what may be the cause of this?

Either Cadence or insoles?
I find that if I do low cadence High effort strength intervals, I get "Hot spots" where normally, I don't (I'm normally a 95+ RPM spinner.)
Also, I replaced the stock Sidi Insoles with Superfeet insoles and all hotspots went away.
The only other thing i can think of is less cushioning socks,
Just a thought

i don't know anything about x2's,but RAAM's advice is that speedplays cause hotspots, looks don't.

Len J has a very good point about the insoles. Get better quality insoles or go all the way and get custom orthotics. Your foot will be better supported and the hotspots will be just a bad memory.
A good insole/orthotic will spread the load over the entire foot. I always had hot spot problems and knee problems until I put a pair of orthotics in my Sidi's. Now there is no pain and I can ride all day without pain.
I had the same problem with my x-2's. I used them for years with no problems. This year I decided to do a few double centuries and while training, at the 130 mile plus mark, I would get hot spots on both feet. I ultimately changed my insoles (Superfeet) and pedals (Shimano PD-R600 SPD-SL) and the problems went away. Good Luck
