im planning on diving into this sport head first....i used to ride mountain bikes a little in the early 90s ......after about 12 years of not riding at all and a broken leg..i bought a klein attitude last summer and really became addicted to it.im 42 and out of shape.....trying to get healthy and fit and quit smoking and i think a bike is the best way for me.anyway.i love the mountain bike but im really leaning towards a roadie....ive found a new old stock 1999 quantum race for $900.00.....my budget is 1500.00..but after a little research the klein seems to be a great deal so my question is is this a good deal?? or is the bike too out dated??.also im seeking advice on begining a ride regiment.im thinking of starting 5 miles a day to start.....any suggestions??.thanks

$900 bucks for a 7 year old bike sounds kinda high to me. I assume it's 9 speed ultegra or maybe even 105. If so $600-$700 is more in line IMO. Also, IT MUST FIT.

5 miles a day also sounds a little modest. If you have been on a MTB with knobbies you will find that the same ride on a road bike takes much less effort. Shoot for 10 miles to start and don't worry about speed just keep a good effort.

If there are some friendly C paced group rides in you area join them. It's a great motivator.

Good Luck and have fun

Off the top of my head can't say when exactly when Klein stopped using proprietary, now hard-to-find headsets, forks and bottom brackets. You might want to look into that before you transfer a lot of cash. Some people who have bought 1990's Kleins are now having a difficult time finding parts used only on Kleins. It doesn't detract from performance—Kleins are great bikes.

You have plenty of choice with $1500 for the bicycle. You can get a brand new specialized, trek, etc bicycle for that range. (Realize you're going to need pedals ~$60-150, shoes ~$40-300, shorts $50-130, helmet, $20-150 etc.) 1999 is hardly outdated, Yeah, if you were a professional racer that would be outdated, but not for what you're looking at getting into. Just make sure it fits.

Just start of with 5 miles, then move to 8 then to 10, soon you'll be doing 25 miles recreational rides with ease.

Everybody else has already urged you to make sure it fits, which is probably the most important thing. FWIW, the price seems high to me, too, but I'm just going by local prices for used bikes, which this apparently isn't, so I'm really just guessing on that.
More important, though: The Quantum was a racing bike, right? Or at least a pseudo-racer, with fairly steep angles, high gearing (53-39 with a 25 or 23-tooth large cog?) and no room for tires larger than about 25mm. For a guy your age, in your physical condition, that may not be ideal. I was exactly there, except for the smoking, 20 years ago. Unless you're prepared to work and suffer and spend a lot of painful time on hills, I'd suggest looking for something with lower gearing (compact crank or triple, plus a cassette with a range of 13-28 or so) and room for 32mm tires. Also, you might want something that will let you get the handlebars higher than I think the Quantum will. You won't be any slower to speak of, and you'll be able to ride a lot farther in comfort.

i have test ridin the bike and it was comfortable and seemed like a ferrari.lol.and i love the look of the bike...but i think im going to offer the guy 700 tops and see what happens.i was under the impression that i could change the stem to raise the handlebars if i wanted.cant you do that with a klein??

If if fits you, $900 for an Ultegra bike is not a bad deal. So what if it's 7 years old? ...as long as it's NOS, it's new for all intents and purposes. Ultegra from 1999 is the exact same component as you'd find on a 2004 bicycle, so it's not like it's outdated by any means.

A newer bike might be a touch lighter, but will be more expensive. If if fits, and you like it, that sounds reasonable to me.
