View Full Version : Day One Saddle report: New Regal
Coot72 02-20-2007, 04:44 PM Today I replaced a Flite Ti Gel with a Regal Ti. The saddles are similar in many ways. If you lay one over the other, the location where each gets wider is at the same place. So I set up the regal with the nose-to-bar distance equal to the Flite's. Saddle height is also the same. If you have a flite with it slammed all the way back, then I would think you would need a seatpost with more setback to use the regal.
I leveled the saddle and rode it for one hour. So far so good. The saddle is a bit wider, and offers more support than a flite. I feel like I am sitting more on my sit bones.
The current Ti railed regals don't seem to have more of a dip than the Flite Ti Gel. If anything the dip is less. The dip on an Aliante is greater.
The smooth leather is nice, and lets you quickly find a good position. No rubbing, even though it's wider.
FYI: I had my sitbones measured at a specialized store. They are ~120mm c-c. I was OK with the Aliante for about a year, until I started to become unhappy with it. That was strange, and I have no explanation. Then I went back to a flite. Flites work for me, but sometimes I wish for more comfort. My theory is that my sitbones are just a tad wider than the flite supports. I especially notice this on rollers, where your bum really gets the workout.
Anyways more reports to follow as I put in some miles.
rouleau3911 02-21-2007, 06:08 AM Expecting my new regal in a few days, can"t wait. I am going from a flite ti gel to the regal so I will be posting here as well.

Good luck Roll! I hope it works.
rouleau3911 02-23-2007, 05:47 PM Got my regal today from excel. Mounted it today. Will ride tomorrow and post a report. So far looks great kinda retro on my tarmac, but cool. Workmanship looks awsome. Better than some of selle italia"s I have had. Can:t wait to ride it.
Dave Hickey 02-23-2007, 06:37 PM Day 1461- Regal report..
I've been using a Regal for about 4 years......:p :p :p
Seriously, I'm interested in what you think. Please keep us informed
rouleau3911 02-24-2007, 03:53 PM I know its personal but input would be apreciated. How are you setting up your regal? Nose high or level? It is different to ride than the flite. Different sweet spot.Different shape. Wider so more support. Just have to tweek the set up. Any input would be appreciated.
Coot72 02-24-2007, 03:53 PM Very cool, Dave! I hope to be among the regal lifers here. So far, after 4 rides, I think it's my favorite saddle. I need some more miles to be sure. Will post more info after a few more rides.
Rouleau, how goes it?
rouleau3911 02-24-2007, 04:23 PM Road it for an hour today. Like I said in my previous post, I like it alot just need to tweek the set up. Up or level? I"ve always set my saddles 10mm nose up. Not sure with the regal. So far I love it. Great support. Nice sweet spot.

Rouleau, I put the regal in the same spot. If you put the regal over the flite, they start to curve at the same point. So I put the nose of the regal the same distance away from the handlebars as the flite. Saddle height is about the same or slightly lower. This puts you in about the same position as before. Tweak from there.
I have the nose-to-tail level. I use a carpenter's level to measure this. A slightly nose down or nose up position can make a big difference with saddles, so you'll need to experiment.
Using a tap measure and level make the switch easier. Good luck!
It's different than the flite. It's wider and more supportive. Especially towards the back. I feel like I'm sitting on my sit bones more. But the saddle isn't too wide or big to get in the way. The smooth leather helps. So far I am convinced it's a great saddle for me.
Did you ride today?
Coot72 02-24-2007, 04:48 PM Road it for an hour today. Like I said in my previous post, I like it alot just need to tweek the set up. Up or level? I"ve always set my saddles 10mm nose up. Not sure with the regal. So far I love it. Great support. Nice sweet spot.
In my haste I misread your post. 10mm nose up is a lot of tilt, but that's what you did with the flite. I had my flite level or nose very slightly down. Since you're tweaking now anyways, you may as well try the saddle leveled. Most all the people on this board who use it ride it level or slightly up or down. If you don't like it just go back.
I agree with you that the sweet spot is sweet. My bet is that there are two more regal fans here. A+!
Dinosaur 02-24-2007, 05:49 PM I like to set my Regal so it's perfectly level. I use a long carpenters level that extends the entire length of the saddle. Of course, I have used this saddle for a long time and have experimented with different positions. Manufacturers say that they designed saddles so they will be positioned level. Makes it easy that way.
wasfast 02-24-2007, 06:41 PM Regals are my second favorite saddle. I have a wide posterior and they seem to work for that very well. Here's the white one with copper rivets I put on my 83 super resto project:

I have a Master X-Light, what model is that? Nice. What is your favorite saddle? I usually alternate off and on. Like my Rolls better me thinks.
toomanybikes 02-25-2007, 06:00 AM I bought my first Regal sometime in either 1985 or 1986.
Loved it then, still love them now.
Regals and Brooks - don't need anything else.

Nice bike. The white regal is sweet. How does the nago ride? What kind of tubing -- slx?

Have you really ridden your Regal saddled bike "every" day for the past four years and are you really interested?

It's SL. Rides like all the other bikes from back then:-) I had alot of fun polishing all the parts and doing the repaint. I plan on selling it soon to start another project. More pictures here:

Nice work! I used to have a red De Rosa SLX, so your bike takes me back.
Here's pic of my regal platform. I have a steel bike that is dialed in, so I experimented with the regal on my caad8.
One week with happy cheeks!

It's a Super. Back then, there were only a couple models really, the Mexico and Super.
Favorite saddle is relative. I've never found a truly comfortable saddle. I currently use a Fizik Aliante on 2 bikes (Rain and dry) and have for the last 3 years. The Regal is the next best thing. I recently bought a Fizik Vitesse which is a wider version of the Aliante and similiar in width to the Regal.
I also have a Koobi Enduro which is just so-so.

Yeah, I don't know why I asked that question. I this talk about Regals and right now I am using a fairly new Selle Italia Flite Gel. I broke my hip about 14 months ago and for some reason the Regal makes my right leg ache(I have a ti rod implanted). I had to pull it off. The Flite causes me no problems. Maybe once the weather warms up I'll try the Regal again...
