View Full Version : Since it's such a 'hot' topic :)
Live Steam 03-02-2007, 10:03 AM I came across this article. It is by a real scientist with real degrees and who teaches the topic at hand. I found it to be compelling and thought others might as well. Unfortunately for the 'greenhouse gang' there is no money in this scenario, so it will probably get phoophooed. However, his theory is derived from a trail of evidence that he believes supports the idea that, as we all alreally know and understand, the Earths climate changes are cyclical. He believes that we actually may be heading toward another ice age. Now that will obviously take millennia, but unlike the 'greenhouse gang' he can point to physical and historical evidence and not just circumstancial evidence.
I wonder how much grant money he sees to further investigate his theory? Probably not much 'cause their ain't no business in the Earth cooling 'cept for those who sell mukluks and fur coats.

Mel Erickson 03-02-2007, 10:07 AM 1 vs. thousands (or at least hundreds). I don't think I'd take that bet and advise you to stay away from Las Vegas.
Live Steam 03-02-2007, 10:20 AM What's your point Mel? Most people believed the Earth was flat too.
As I said, there is no money in this scenario for anyone, so it probably won't get much light shed on it. I mean how can you stop the Earth from cooling? But we can make a ton of bucks trying to figure out how we can stop it from getting warmer because we drive cars and use electricity.
thatsmybush 03-02-2007, 10:21 AM I was fortunate to be in attendance as our university hosted a meeting of British Consulates at our Solar House this past week.
The two things that struck me as I talked simultaneously with both a labour party rep and a conservative representative was that ONE: they can drink and man when I say drink I mean it. One imbibed no fewer than half a dozen scotches touched with a hint of bottled water. While the other was drinking Kentucky Bourbon and admonished the bartender that one should never destroy good whiskey with ice or water...and TWO: that both major parties in England despite disagreeing on everything else believed the concept of global warming had surpassed partisanship, there was aligned agreement from all parties on the issue of global warming.
Just sayin'
MikeBiker 03-02-2007, 10:23 AM I'm for global warming during the winter and against it in the summer.

Follow the money that will give everyone the answer.

I find it hard to believe this means he knows more than Al Gore......

Live Steam 03-02-2007, 10:27 AM Go argue with Mel about that :)

steamy, I bet your one of those that doesn't think that HIV causes AIDS too. There are several "real" scientists that support that view. Real scientist, what the hell does that mean, what a joke.
filtersweep 03-02-2007, 10:31 AM In the 70s there was talk of global cooling... big deal.
I still believe that sound environmental policies are good for everyone--- regardless whether or not global warming is occurring.
Mel Erickson 03-02-2007, 10:34 AM Bet you didn't know that I'm a card carrying member of the Flat Earth Society, did you?
Steamy, you put your money on your one scientist and his cooling theory. I'll put mine on the vast majority of scientists and their warming theory. We'll put the money in a time capsule with strict instructions not to open it for 1,000 years. Our ancestors will open the capsule and winner takes all. How much you wanna bet?
Live Steam 03-02-2007, 10:41 AM I like this, but who gets to bury it? How about me? :)
Mel Erickson 03-02-2007, 10:49 AM But I get to decide where.
Live Steam 03-02-2007, 10:49 AM No one is disputing that 'sound environmental policies' aren't a good thing. However there are layered issues here that are disturbing, not the least of which is the idea that these high and mighty liberals want everyone to believe the sky is falling, want the proletariat to modify their behavior while they go on their merry way and that these same high and mighty liberals are profitting from the very idea they champion.
We should all be concerned about what we do, what we use and how we dispose of it.

I'm prepared. I bought a lot of cold weather gear back when all the scientists who are now saying it's getting too hot were saying it was going to get real cold again. If they're right this time, I'll just go around in my lycra bike shorts. Not to worry.
Bocephus Jones II 03-02-2007, 12:22 PM I don't get you Steam...you seem more interested in finding crackpots that support your warped world view so you can keep thinking you are "right" than in discovering the real truth. You'd make a good lawyer.

Steam would have taken OJ as a client in a heartbeat....
rufus 03-02-2007, 12:55 PM of course we're headed for another ice age. but what do you suppose is going to happen in the years before we get there?
and if we knew we were headed for an ice age, but there were thiungs we could do now that would either prevent, or ameliorate the effects of it, should we do them?
or should we just stick our heads in the sand?

not unlike those 'crazy righties' who stand in the way of alternative fuel sources because they have vested interest in oil. but let's forget about those people.
also, i'd like to see you reconcile this new stance of yours that there is so much money in green energy, with your past and somehow still current view that demanding green energy would derail our economy.
undies 03-02-2007, 01:05 PM I hate to break this to you Steam but a lot of the "greenhouse gang" has already been saying this for years. The major concern is that global warming will melt the ice caps, disrupt north Atlantic currents, and lead to rapid cooling and an acceleration of the next ice age. Remember that movie "The Day After Tomorrow"? Sure it was a crappy movie and everything happened unrealistically fast, but it was essentially based on this scenario.
Welcome to 1998 Steam.

Oh yeah, we'd all be filling our furel tanks frrom the garden hoses if those evil oil companies and their gubmint lackeys weren't blocking the research and destroying all the formulae.

when you found out there was no longer any more food to eat or clean water to drink...
temperate farming in what are now arctic tundra areas would be next to impossible..unless you're a big fan of orange and banannas...
just imagine...we'll at least have more rain forests to cut down....in Texas...Snake could get out his big chainsaw!!
its been stated here before, but we're only one big eruption or comet away from a major global cooling cycle...earths' climate changes are normal on the big picture, they've just never happened this quickly before. It'll take some record breaking summer heatwaves to really wake some people up...when central Europe and N. American get above 115 degrees for a couple week on end, you'll see some action towards self preservation by the human race....if it doesn't happen you can say "I told ya so".

Turtleherder 03-02-2007, 03:17 PM Thanks for the laugh Steam. Follow the money, frigging' priceless. Yeah those greenhouse gang scientists and their few million in research money vs. a few hundred billion from big oil, auto manufacturers, heavy industry etc. Steam, go get a beer and start burping up some green house gases to help out your side. :D
By the way I have in front of me a Voodoo Vator by Atwater brewing, it's a dopplebock at about 8.5%. Hmmm malty. Next up is a Rogue Old Crustacean barley wine.

Fredrico 03-02-2007, 08:02 PM Maybe I shouldn't be butting into this bragfest, but did anyone read the guy's argument? What I got out of it is icebergs from melting glaciers will float down into the deeper ocean currents and cool the water like a refrigerator. He claims this has happened in the past.
Well, the theory I heard about cooling was that CO2 and greenhouse gases might cloud over the sun, blocking solar heat and the planet would cool, somewhat like another theory of "nuclear winter," the earth cooling after a global nuclear holocaust.
The planet is now getting warmer from greenhous gases collecting in the atmosphere and the oceans are getting warmer and melting the polar ice. How can melting ice end up cooling the oceans, which will according to this guy's theory, in turn cool the atmosphere?
Talk about money: is he working for the oil industry?
atpjunkie 03-02-2007, 08:22 PM Steam lives in NY which will be submerged, Snake lives in Texas which will look like the Sahara. Sorry folks this guys arguement is akin to saying the melting ice in TMB's cocktails would have a long term effect of cooling his drinks down. Come back in 2hrs and tell me his drink is getting cooler (TMB don't finish it for Sciences sake)

The worst part is Texas will be full of people from New York. It's already pretty dry in the part I live in.

in other words I think I'd hold off on that whole 'Texas Seceding' thing.
