Frameforum.net is pleased to announce the first recipient of its “Framebuilder of the Year” Award.

The announcement/presentation is taking place at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show, San Jose, CA (2-4 March 2007) the world’s premier event for custom frame and bike builders. The award will be presented by Show President and accomplished framebuilder Don Walker, along with industry legend and founder of Salsa Cycles, Ross Shafer, currently of Six-Nine Design.

The winner was chosen from the membership of Frameforum.net. It was decided that the winner could come from either the professional or hobbyist ranks, could be working in any material, with any fabrication technique and be building any style of frame; road, track, MTB or BMX. Skill, ability and consistent high build quality - while obviously major considerations - were not the only requirements. The builders’ personal dedication, commitment to the framebuilding community and support for the custom framebuilding cause were also major factors in choosing the winner.

The winner is a Frameforum.net regular. Since joining in May 2006, he has made an outstanding contribution to the forum.

‘Distinctive, tough and rugged’ would be a pretty accurate description of not only his frames, it also sums up the terrain outside his workshop and of the man himself! He’s become our “resident expert” in fillet-brazed MTB frames, reviving interest in a sector of the custom-built scene that had lost its way a bit during the ‘90’s MTB boom.

Most of all though, he’s demonstrated an incredible determination, self-belief and made colossal physical sacrifices to stay in the framebuilding game. Here’s why.

In October 2005, an horrific collision with a pick-up truck left our guy with truly frightening injuries. The list of injuries sustained included a broken back, neck, legs, ribs and massive internal trauma. But our hero – and there’s no other way to describe him - fought back with an incredible will to survive. Just a few short months after as close a near-death experience as it’s possible to get, he was back in his workshop re-arranging the place. Workbenches were lowered and power tools repositioned to allow him to get back into building again – only this time from a wheelchair. Where most people would put all their efforts into physical recovery, our builder not only met the physical challenges of his injuries, he overcame them to get back in the game. Last year he built 22 frames; all the while fighting off excruciating pain and discomfort as well as being in the incredibly difficult situation of having to work from a wheelchair. He achieved all this despite undergoing further surgery and regular intensive physio rehab sessions. This year he plans to build much more, as he adapts to his new working environment. The word “quit” is not in his dictionary. He’s a great example to anyone coming into the framebuilding scene and an inspiration to anyone working in it now.

We’re proud to announce winner of this years Frameforum.net “Framebuilder of the Year” Award goes to the one and only:
Steve Garro of Coconino Cycles
