I'm in search of an affordable STEEL cyclocross frame, preferably with disc brake tabs.

Any suggestions?

I'm about to buy the SURLY CROSSCHECK...that frame looks real nice, and the $400 price is right...but, it doesn't have disc brake tabs.

are there any affordable steel frames with disc tabs?

if not, are there any steel frames in the same price range that i should look at?

Thanks for the input.

Howdy! I did the same search a while back and adding the disk brakes just didn't seem to be worth it to me. In the end, I really narrowed it down to a Surly CrossCheck and an Soma DoubleCross. I chose the Soma, but I don't think either would be a BAD choice - depending on your intended use.

The one frame I saw that met your steel & disk requirements was the Lemond Poprad, but it has a $750 MSRP for the frame. Other bikes to look at are the Jamis Nova and Bianchi Volpe.

There is the Surly Karate Monkey. Its not CX frame, but many people have set it up with drop bars. Check the geometry charts to see if it could work for you. Its a great bike (I owned one), but might not be the best solution for you unless you REALLY want disk brakes.

You could also go with a Cross Check and the steel Dimension CX Disc fork. That would get you most of the benefits of Disc brakes.

Redline monocog would be excellent, but that's a MTB frame. Has disc tabs, available as 26 or 29'er. $250 for the 26". $400 for the 29'er.

Rims are 700C Salsa Delgado Cross, tires are WTB Exiwolf 2.3" 29ers. I ended up giving the frame to a friend of mine who also rides it with 25C road tires and an XT drivetrain.

29er tires on 700c rims??? that works?Yep. "True" 29er rims are a bit wider to better accomodate wide tires, but the rim diameter is exactly the same for both (622mm).

you can do the mullet- disc front and canti/v rear... a new fork with tabs and proper a-c is all it would take to use with a mechanical disc
