View Full Version : Campy cable routing...
DIRT BOY 03-19-2007, 12:20 PM Both in front? Both in back? Front and back?
What's your prefernce?
On my Zipp B2 bar I ran them front and back. On my new Syntace CF Racelite, I ran them the same way, but there is not a groove in back. They just don't feel right. Going in the front just felt weird too and seemed harder to set-up.
Anyone else? These 31.8 bars feel really big at the tops, but so far I am not missing the flat top bars.
bikeboy389 03-19-2007, 01:08 PM Don't know what you do if you don't have grooves front and back on your bars. Far as I can tell, modern Campy cables are designed to go under the wraps front and back, and not really any other way.
Good luck with that--if you find a solution let us know.
tourdreamer 03-19-2007, 01:57 PM I run both of the cables in the front. Just my preference.

There is a huge groove in front, but not the back But putting both cables there is tough with Jagwire Ripcord housing.

Route both cables in front with the shift cable in the groove and the brake right below it. The shift cables require and lot of pressure to hold them tight to the bars as they cross over the top and a few wraps of fiberglass reinforced strapping tape to hold them. I also use "camper seal" foam tape placed along the crossed over shift cable to improve comfort. There is nothing more difficult about setting the cables up this way. If done properly, the cable will fall into the big fold in your palm and won't cause discomfort.
FWIW, my Easton OS bars actually feel smaler than most 26.0 bars. Only the center is oversized and I never put my hands that close to the stem.

I had a hard time getting these to bend for front routing. The cable housing is very stiff as it desgined for brakes and shifters (5mm) and works very well but can be difficult with tight bends.
I will try it again with packing tape like you said. Keep the gears cables in back the the brakes cables as well right?
The Syntace racelite carbon is probaly 31.0 maybe across the tops. Very thick, but feels great in my hands after a few miles.

I was trying to get the new 07 Easton EC90 SLX for Campy but no one had them. So I saved a few bucks and went with what I carry. Syntace is good to me as well so I am trying to support them more.

I run mine front and back. As you have already noticed, it means less bend in the casing.
One of your problems is the generic cable housing - it can be much stiffer than campy. I had the same problem using generic.
I've considered trying shimano 4mm housing, but haven't yet.
Dinosaur 03-20-2007, 07:09 AM I use Deda Magic Bars with grooves for the Campy cables. I use the front and rear grooves. I can't feel the cables, but it probably has a lot to do about how you rotate your bars.

I've considered trying shimano 4mm housing, but haven't yet. Thanks for the tips. I finally got it to work with both up front. I was just more careful with housing lengths and I had to rotate the cables a bit as they are very stiff. The Jagwire Ripcord is great stuff and work very well. I am using PowerCordz for gear cables and 5mm housing is needed. But those are driving my crazy as well.
Afetr the next few weeks I will probaly just go back to full campy cables/wires.
Thanks!
Xyzzy 03-20-2007, 06:27 PM As you cable up the bar, wrap a few billion wraps of dental floss around the whole bar. I also like to tie up the two cables as they get ready to leave the tape, so you don't get that dreaded, unsightly huge gap between the cables.
You won't feel the floss through the bar, like you can with packing tape. (I run very thin bar wrap.)
The cables ain't going anywhere, trust me. Packing tape is like a Yugo. Floss is a Mack truck.
100 feet of dental floss doesn't weigh anything.
And, when you remove it, you don't get a pile of sticky tape residue.
Finally, there is that minty fresh feeling.
Seriously, try it.

The SP41 Shimano housing isn't great because of the long plastic ferrules needed. The ferrules don't sit as well into the body of the Ergo and the housing exits the ferrule with a sharp-radius bend, often only contacting the ferrule though 270ish degrees. I've never tried SP41 without the Shimano plastic ferrules because I've never seen a steel ferrule in 4mm.
I think the best housing for Campag is either the OEM Campag or Nokons which fit well into the Ergo body.

Which of Campagnolo (Record) OEM and Nokons protrude less from the handlebar grooves (e.g. Deda Newton), or is it a tie? Presume one cable in the front groove and the other cable in the rear groove. Using thin bar tape, I would like to feel the cables as little as possible and maintain as small a diameter and round shape as possible.
Thanks.

The Nokons use a steel "slinky" which goes from the Ergo body to near where the bar tap ends. This steel part is narrower than the aluminium Nokons or the Campag housing, but I think it reality you'd be splitting hairs as to which one you felt more / less.
