hi all,
if i change out my ramped 53 ring for an unramped 53 on a 53/39 front set-up, will it still shift? How does the ramping affect shift quality? Is the shifting not as smooth with an unramped and how much or is it just noisier?
have fun,

It's not a noise issue--the ramps help pick up the chain and shove it onto the ring. I'd imagine you'll have to maintain pressure on the shifter for some extra time until the chain shifts. One thing is sure: it won't shift as quickly or cleanly.

Could automobile manual transmissions shift before synchro-mesh was developed? Of course it will shift, it just may take a lighter touch on the shift lever.
I learned to ride a bike before ramped chainrings (and indexed shifting in general), so I developed the light touch for reliable shifting without ramps and gates. I still haven't put pinned or ramped chainrings on my road bike, but I can reliable shift chainrings, seated or standing, sprinting or climbing. I even start criteriums in my small chainring because I can get a faster intial acceleration in the smaller gear, and pop up the big chainring quickly and easily.
