View Full Version : Compact Double vs Standard

I was thinking about some things I found on here while doing a search trying to research the benefits of a compact vs a standard crankset. I read a lot about how a compact will give you lower gearing and make it easier to petal the bike up a hill.. Well I got curious and did some math, I assumed that the number of teeth is proportional to the diameter of the gear, so using the formula: (crank tooth count) / (cassette tooth count) = (number of turns the wheel will make per turn of the petal).

Using this I did some quick calculations and found the following turns of the wheel per crank turn:

Standard Highest gear ratio:
53/12 = 4.42 wheel/crank turns

Standard lowest gear ration:
39/25 = 1.56 wheel/crank turns

Compact Highest Gear Ratio:
50/11 = 4.55 wheel/crank turns

Compact Lowest Gear Ratio:
36/23 = 1.565 wheel/crank turns

This tells me that you get more speed out of a compact (along with more resistance) than with a standard in the highest gear and slightly harder cranks in the lowest gear with the compact.

Am I doing something wrong? This seems contrary to what everyone else believes (judging from reading the posts in this forum).

Are there any more advantages/disadvantages I should know about before buying a bike with a compact?

Thanks,

LT

I understand that if you keep the Cassette the same then obviously the gearing will be scaled down a bit, however the bikes I have seen with the compact front have the scaled down cassette to counteract the effect...

If you do the calc with a standard cassette it comes out to:

Compact Crank, Standard Cassette High:
50/12 = 4.17

Compact Crank, Standard Cassette Low:
36/25 = 1.44

Low
36/25 = 1.44

Well, there's part of your answer.

Well, there's part of your answer.
Obviously the same cassette used with a compact crank will result in more power due to the smaller gear size reducing the ratio. My whole point was that if you are buying a bike with a compact setup, it will likely have matching cassette, therefore you will get the same gear ratio (if not higher) as with a standard setup. I was simply pointing out that it is not correct to state that just because a bike has a compact crank it will be better for climbing hills...

There are two ways that people do "compact" setups. The original driving force is to get lower gears, so you use a standard cassette with smaller chain rings. Then there's the "micro drive" idea, where you "save weight" by using smaller cassette cogs. The latter is fine if you think that's important, but what really happens is more rapid chain, chainring, and especially cog wear. IMO, this is not a good idea, but hey, knock yourself out :)

It all depends on one's fitness level which crankset would be the better choice.....standard double, compact double, or a triple...
I switched to a compact double because I had trouble pushing the 53 big ring. With the compact's 50 big ring I can use all the smaller cogs on my cassette and stay in the big ring longer over varying terrain.
My 39 small chainring on my standard double wasn't small enough with my 26 low cog on most steep climbs. The compact's 34 small ring made all the difference in the world.
Of course, if the bike comes with compact cranks but with undesirable cassette, change it to suit you.

How much quicker is the chain wear? I am looking to buy a first bike and one of the ones I am looking at has a compact setup, with the gear ratios I listed in my orriginal post. Would I be better off not buying that bike (Fuji Roubaix Pro - $999.99)

Thanks for any advice!

is it easier to pedal a smaller chainring up a hill or a bigger one? Clearly the smaller one. That's why a compact at 50/34 gives you lower gears than a 50/39 (it's what I had......since he asked about the smaller chainring for hills it's aproppriate)

Look at the chart below which gives you MPH at 3 different cadences assuming 700X23 tires, 172.5 cranks and a 12X25 cassette.

How much quicker is the chain wear? I am looking to buy a first bike and one of the ones I am looking at has a compact setup, with the gear ratios I listed in my orriginal post. Would I be better off not buying that bike (Fuji Roubaix Pro - $999.99)

Can't tell you how much quicker chainwear would be, but don't let the compact crank vs.standard crank thing play too big of a role in your buying decision. Most components on most bikes are easily and quickly swapped out for others. For many, trying out different components is a very satisfying part of the sport.

is it easier to pedal a smaller chainring up a hill or a bigger one? Clearly the smaller one.

This is exactly the misconseption i was trying to highlight in my post. It is not the chainring size that determines how hard/easy it is to petal up a hill, it is the ratio of the front sprocket to the rear...

LT

it depends on what you're measuring.

With the same cog, the relative size of the chainring determines if it's easier or not......a smaller chainring is easier than a bigger chainring (with the same cog)....which is how you think about this in the real world.

Look......The size of the largest Cog you can use is limited by the rear der. (Shimano states it's limit at a 27 Even a Canpy long cage is limited to a 29). So for most riders the only way to access easier gears (short of a Mountain bike rear der) is to put a smaller chainring on the crank. A "Standard" double crank can only go to a 38 chainring. To access a smaller chainring, you either need to go to a compact double, a triple or a touring chainring (which is usually a triple). That's how it works in the real world.

Me, For the bike I take when I go to the mountains (I live in the flats) I have a 50/39/28 triple with a 12/27 rear cassette. For flats I have the Standard (for me) 50/39 (I don't need anything bigger than a 50 nor do most non-racers unless you feel the need to pedal going down mountains), but when I climb I have the 28.

YMMV

So when a novice like myself goes to buy a new bike and is told that the compact will be easier to climb with it is not really true, because a lot of new bikes with a compact chainring have 11-23 in place of 12-25s. I know the experts out there will be able to set up a bike, but to tell a newb that buying a bike that has a compact chainring on it will aid him in hill climbing is wrong unless you know the whole story... i dont know if I have mistated myself or if I am simply not communicating effectively, but it seems that we are talking about two different things.

LT

the "potential" to be an easier climbing bike....depending on casette.

That being said........a 50/34 with an 11/23 may be better (depending on the riders cadence and normalspeed) than a 53/39 with a 12/25 because of (potentially) less 2 & 3 tooth jumps "In the gear range" he/she normally uses.

The easiest way to make decisions about gear combinations is to use a gearing chart and compare different alternatives (Like I did) Find what workd for YOU.

As suggested in my previous post, and as Len J has shown in his posts, the (front) chainrings and the (rear) cassette of any bike you'll buy will come off and be replaced so easily and quickly that you can tailor your bike to the exact kind of riding you're going to do—from day to day if need be. It makes little sense to argue gears and the force needed to pedal uphill of any bike when chainrings and cassettes can be changed in a matter of minutes.

The problem is you're giving it too much thought. Just ride the damn thing! ;-)

Proublem is I neeed to buy it first... and I want to make sure I like the one I buy and dont regret it in 6 month/1year. I just started looking into this whole bike thing (I am used to having a motor on my bike!) and it is a whole lot to swallow at once!

You're analysis is essentialy correct, but it's really not that difficult. Standard cranks will almost always have a 53/39 setup these days. Compacts are mostly 50/34 setups. The 50/34 reduces the big ring by 6% and the small ring by almost 15%. The difference is 9%, which is the same percentage as a typical 1-sprocket shift on the cassette. This 9% is an increase in gearing range. The penalty for this increase in range is the need to shift one more sprocket every time you shift from one chainring to another. In a typical gearing progression, if you shift from the 53 to the 39, it requires a shift of 2-3 sprockets smaller to produce a uniform (average 9%) change. With a 50/34 it requires one more.

If you choose a 50/36, then you don't get any significant difference in the gearing range or the extra cog shifting penalty. Then you can still choose to use the same cassette that one might use with a 53/39 or a cassette starting with one cog smaller to make the ratios about the same as a 53/39.

What a bike comes with in the way of a cassette when new is irrelevant. Any dealer will change the cassette to what you want and it should be at no charge, unless the cassette is a higher level product than what came with the bike.

If you have no riding experience, then there is no way to know when you purchase the bike that the gearing will be just what you want. As you gain experience and strength, your gearing needs will change.

Since you're looking at a Shimano equipped bike, I'd consider the 50/36 to have a slight advantage in options. If you find a 50/12 not enough top gear then you can use a cassette starting with an 11. With a 53/39, if a 53/12 is more gear than you need, shimano doesn't offer a cassette starting with a 13T to lower the range (campy does).

I just got a new bike with a Compact crank. It came stock with 50/34 front and 11-26 cassette.

If you're worried about the gearing of an 11-23 maybe look for a bike with a cassette that goes 11-25 (my husband's new bike with a compact crankset of 50/36) or 11-26. We had no problems with our gearing climbing on this ride:

That will be my choice if I have a problem with my standard double crank but I guess many people will disagree with me. If you have problems with a standard double, get a triple and have wider range gears.

If I have a steep mountain to climb, I'll get a triple. A compact double? Why would I want to downgrade with a Compact when I can upgrade with a Triple?

Well, since you're new to the whole cycling thing, then a triple will let you explore, a bit more, what gearing works best for you. Gear ratios mean little to you right now since you don't have time on the road to give those ratios meaning.

For you first bike go with a triple. I road one for 3 years with a 12-27 cassette. I now have a compact with 12-25 and miss the triple at times.

If Shimano made an 11-26 cassette the compact would be about perfect for the type of riding I do. With a 12-25 I am always wishing I had a higher and lower gear.

Triples in the past were more finicky than they are now so many avoided them. The latest version Shimano 10 triple has very good front derailleur adjustability from the shifter.

Personally, I like a triple over a compact for two reasons: a) more choices to be in the "right" gear, b) better low gearing (with right sprocket set in the back); this comes in handy for really steep climbs or long days of riding in mountains when I may get tired and need some lower gears.

I was looking at the climbing charts for a gran fondo here in Italy and the event organizers recommended the following equivalent ratios for a climb of 7km with an average of 8% and a steep section of 10%; this for non racers:

39x29 or 34x25 or 30x23

Why would you consider either of those up/down grades? Seems if you remain within the same gruppo they're lateral moves ("crossgrades"). Oh wait, you've got Campy Chorus? Sorry, you can't get a Chorus triple...guess you'll *have* to downgrade to a triple. Or upgrade to a Record compact double.

SRAM makes an 11-26 that will be compatible - unless it's a DA hub, then there might be problems (not sure.)

LT Rich: The 11-23 on the compact that you are looking at is unusual for a stock bike. As stock, the bike came from Fuji with a 12-25. That's the most common "compact" setup I've seen, though folks do switch them. Probably, the 11-23 came from another bike sold whose buyer wanted a 12-25, so the shop made the switch. You can ask them to switch back, which they should do without charge. Going to a triple will almost certainly cost more on the same bike, and might involve other compromises if choosing a different bike.

I have both compacts and triples (standards, too), and personally prefer the compact. But note I own both, which I wouldn't if there was a definitely superior choice. The triple is more versatile, so might be a better choice for a first bike until you can sort out what you really want/need. Unless you live in terribly hilly terrain, the compact is probably enough.

Wait wait wait, hang on a minute. Let's look at this again for a moment .....

Proublem is I neeed to buy it first... and I want to make sure I like the one I buy and dont regret it in 6 month/1year. I just started looking into this whole bike thing (I am used to having a motor on my bike!) and it is a whole lot to swallow at once!

LT

The way I see it there are a FEW problems right here that NEED to be addressed before you concern yourself with wtf to buy. From the top, shall we?

FIRST sentence - "Problem is I neeed to buy it first" - NO! WRONG! If you're dealing with a GOOD LBS (Local Bike Shop, just in case) then you should be able to test ride a few bikes before you plunk down any cash/plastic. Don't expect to be able to go to the local mountains for a day, BUT you're still entitled, in most places on this planet, to a test ride for 10 or 15 minutes before you buy. This should provide you with some hands-on information with what you seek. This should, IMHO, be something that you look into with great vigor - post up in the secion here on RBR that represents your area best and ask for good LBS recommendations (if you don't already have some).

This ties-in with "problem" #2 - your LBS. Do you have one? Have you thought about if you're even going to utilize an LBS, or just mail order a bike? If LBS, have you talked with them about this concern? I can't say "many", but i'm sure a good number of LBSs out there would gladly help you if you felt a crankset choice really wasn't working for you if you expressed implicit concern within a week or two of owning your bike. You know the whole "happy customer" thing and all that. Sure, maybe they'll try to upgrade you at the same time and score a few extra ucks, or maybe not ..... point is to ASK before you buy the bike (ties-in with expressing concern that I mentioned moments ago).

Okay, last point and i'll shut up (your welcome! :p :D ) - you're buying your first road bike - there will be plenty of things to get used to and i'm sure a few parts to be changed after a month, then a few months. These things happen, simply, because you need to put your ass on the bike and ride it, form an opinion on things, then deal with those that need correcting/changing. Really, standard or compact crankset should be pretty LOW on the list of "wtf should I look at when buying a road bike?" list, especially for a beginner - worry about frame size/fit, worry about tire size, worry about component level/quality, worry about plenty of other things that could make a more substantial difference in your first road bike experience. Test ridng a bike is important and testing a few is vital ..... off you go.

I have found a great LBS actually, the problem occurred when I tried to "shop around" a little and ran into a so/so LBS. I took things this LBS told me with a grain of salt thinking that they would say whatever they thought I wanted to hear. In the end I did test ride a whole bunch of bikes and decided on a Trek 1500 double (standard). I have put money down on it and I am awaiting my next paycheck. I really cant wait to get it!

Now the next question is, anyone in the Atlanta area want to teach a Newbee how to do this?

Your right, any idea if SRAM cassettes have any impact on shift quality with an Ultegra 10spd?

It's funny because when I first started riding in the early 80's, Campy ruled and used 42/52 or 42/53 crank set up w/ 6 speed freewheels in the back being 12-21! Now on my "****"ano 9speed, I'm always looking for a better gear than that 39 tooth inner chainring. Something about the 39 that just does not work for me. I still ride my old Italian frame w/the 42 chainring and I prefer that for climbing to the 39 w/ a 23 tooth big cog in the back.

I dont know the answer to your question, however I do know that my LBS said that I could go as high as a 27 in the rear with my Ultegra RD. She told me some way to do this and it seemed like it made sence, I just dont remember now. I dont know if mixing the brands would make a whole lot of difference, arent all cassettes made to the same specs? Obviously some are lighter or more stiff or whatever, but as far as the distance between the cogs (which I am guessing would be the major factor between one DR working well with a cassette) should remain the same... I am probably dead wrong here, but Ill let someone who knows a lot tear me apart on it!!

Glad to hear you chose a bike and an LBS. So you chose a standard front setup? What cassette size? As a newbie, I hope you got a something with a 26 or 27. If not, any LBS worth their salt would swap one out for you. There is nothing special that needs to be done - just take off the old and put on the new. If it's a big change, you may need to tweak chain length/derailleur settings a little, but it will work just fine with the Ultegra r.der. Mixing and matching compatible Shimano / SRAM parts is regularly done with no problems.

So going back to your original question - a compact double can be said to be better for climbing because it has the potential for easier gears with available cassettes. And, normally, bikes sold with a compact double will not be sold with an 11-23, so by default, they will come with easier gearing.

The reality is that our bodies are very adaptable machines, and we get used to whatever we happen to use regularly. I've got bikes with standard and compacts (with the same 12-25 rear), and it usually takes a little bit of time on either to get used to it after riding the other, but I do get used to it.

I happen to like the 53-39 a little bit better than the 50-36, but not enough to bother to swap the compact out. I haven't ridden my 48-38 CX bike enough to form a real opinion.

But the bottom line is just get out and ride.

I've not tried a SRAM 10s cassette, but the accounts I have heard so far of shifting them with Shimano mechs has been positive. LT Rich, you are right in that THESE brands can have their cassettes and mechs mixed, but that's not a universal truth - Campy for example wouldn't work under Shimano mechs (or vice versa.) And there are some "compatible" brands that simply aren't made that well. There is a small compatibility issue with newer Dura-Ace hubs being slightly more particular about what cassettes will go onto them - basically, only Shimano 10-speed cassetttes (of any level, though) will go on them. I believe that SRAM 10s cassettes have the old 9s style splines, and so won't interface properly. But for aftermarket or Ultegra or below hubs, the SRAM should fit fine. (And I may have that story wrong, at that.)

And the shop was right - you can fit a 27 under a normal Shimano RD just fine - it's made to take it. Just a simple adjustment or two to the RD and all's good to go. But by Shimano's specifications, the normal RD has a total capacity of 29 teeth, while a 12-27 and a 50-34 result in 31 teeth needed - 2 teeth too much. Folks claim it works fine. I've only played around with it on a borrowed cassette for a single ride - didn't find a problem. It was close, though - there are probably certain chainstay lengths that it wouldn't like, and there are definitely certain crossed gear combinations that are right out.

I know how to ride a bike... I was talking about etiquette and efficiency.. and the finer points of the sport!

I did find a great LBS, and I am glad I did... it played a big part in my choice of bikes.

The gearing is 53/39 12-25... i know it is high, but I think i will keep it there. My LBS said that there isn't a HILL i cant climb with that gearing, but a mountain would be a different story. So I will buy a second cassette before I go out and climb my first mountain.
