I mentioned in a ride report a couple of weeks ago that I had broken the dropout on my trusty everyday/messenger/constant companion bike for the second time and it was time to let her go. Well, I scored a 2002 or so (but never built or ridden) Specialized Allez frame and fork with a Ritchey headset for $71. I borrowed a car and a friend and drove a couple of hours out to the Sierra foothills to pick it, so I even saved on the shipping (although gas and some really good fajitas on the way probably came out to more). I swapped all the parts out from my old Somec (save the bb which was a different thread) and I was rolling.
I've put four to five hundred miles on it so far and it rides great. It's no top shelf frame, but it is snappy when accelerating and downright twitchy in its handling (with the kind of riding I do I appreciate a bike that goes when I say go).
Anyway, enough babble, here's a few pictures of it out and about town this week, and a couple more after a tune up in my workshop, er, ok, kitchen.
