I'm surprised nothing is in the archives about riding in Kauai. Nothing that I could find anyway. I'm going to be there in a few days and I'm bringing my CX bike. I found some good info on MTBR for off road, but I'd like to get some road riding in too...maybe. The info I've seen so far seems to revolve around the fact that Kauai has little to no decent sized shoulders to bike on. Maybe that's a clue, hmmm?

The main ride I'm hoping to do is starting in Waimea and biking up the canyon and back. Anybody have experience with that? The main problem is probably that people will be gawking and not looking for bikers. It seems similar to riding on portions of Hwy 1 in Marin. Scary, not necessarily the smatest thing in the world, but not wholly unreasonable.

Anybody care to chime in?

Your pretty much right on with, "scary, but not wholly unreasonable" point of view. No shoulders, tourist taking in the views...not looking for bikers.Saw two roadies in a two week span last summer. They where cooling off with shaved ice at a stand on the side of the road. Tons of other outdoor things to do in Kauai as well, hikes, kayaks trips, exploring beaches. It really is a breath taking location.Be careful, come back whole.

I'll be there all next week also with the family. At the most I'll rent a cruiser or MTB. I can't imagine road riding is great with there being just one main road around the island and all the tourists like me rubbernecking the sights and trying to find stuff. Can't imagine hauling a bike there. Personally I'd just rent.

I was in Kauai in December and drove up Waimia (however it's spelled) canyon. While I didn't see any roadies, there is a company that shuttles tourists to the top and let's them coast all the way down the canyon. They've got a shuttle in front a back to keep them safe, but at least biking up there isn't unheard of.

I saw a few roadies riding up the canyon, but those 3 road bikes were the only road bikes I saw that whole week. Should tell you something. FWIW I did see lots of oldsters running.
