Next week I am going to decide which rims to buy for the wheel set on my slowly assembling bicycle. I've been looking at Mavic cxp 33 because but the guy at my bike shop recommended them but he also recommended the Velocity Deep Vs which I think look cool and are cheaper. However I was reading a book about bicycle touring which said that rims with a deep v shape catch more more resistance in cross winds which makes sense. I'm going on tour in a few months and from a previous trip I know the area I'm going to has some serious cross winds especially in the spring and early summer. Should I stick with the mavics or go velocity or do you guys have any other suggestions for rims that would be good in the city as well for touring at around 80 bucks a rim?

The profiles of these two rims are not that much different as far as cross winds are concerned. They would both be affected about the same. And, neither would be a serious problem on a loaded touring bike. For unloaded touring, you would also need to consider rider weight and skill to decide whether there would be issues with either.

I have a new set of wheels on the way from Joe Young. They have Phil Wood hubs and Velocity rims with 36 spokes. I wouldn't get too wrapped up on the crosswind issue with taller rims. The rims you mention aren't really tall enough to make much difference. What you get with a cpx33 or velocity rim is strength. I have a cpx 33 wheelset that I use on my road bike. They have been great rims, I have never heard a wheelbuilder complain about using them. Joe Young recommended the velocity rims because I plan on using them for commuting with 28mm or larger tires.
for me has been the 3 sets of prebuilt performance mavic OP/ ultegra wheel sets ive bought. They really are bullet proof and last a good long time...
