View Full Version : MUT King
bigbill 03-26-2007, 09:08 PM The weather was a little iffy today so the MUT wasn't crowded like it usually is in the afternoon. I rode 80 miles yesterday so I was taking it easy today. I got the camera out and started taking rolling shots. Obligatory leg shot with my faded Hincapie shorts. I will probably have to get new shorts when I move to the mainland. The Hawaiian sun has made most of them a shade of dark gray.
bigbill 03-26-2007, 09:11 PM Ever wanted to know what a 23 year old arthroscopy scar looks like? More MUT heading towards Neal Blaisdale Park.
bigbill 03-26-2007, 09:16 PM Riding through the park. If you look closely you might see the guy who rides with elbow pads on. He wears shorts, no knee pads, just elbow pads. The picnic shelter is usually full of homeless people and ice addicts during the week but the police clear it out on Friday so it can be used for birthdays and such on the weekend. The other rider is a fellow naval officer who lives not far from me.

wayneanneli 03-26-2007, 10:18 PM Interesting shots Bill. I wonder what the MUTs in Sardinia are like, any ideas? What's with all the parked cars? Do they drive on the MUT to get to the parking? Finally, does the city clean the picnic area after the police have cleaned out all the homeless and addicts? If they're living there for a week, it might be pretty gunky.

Actually, the homeless clean the shelter before they leave. They bag all the trash and sweep it out. Part of the "no hassle" from the police deal. Five percent of the population here is homeless with a 2 percent unemployment rate. Homeless doesn't necessarily mean destitute. The cars are parked along the MUT near a junkyard. I don't complain, the owners of the junkyard make sure they are clear of the path and keep everything swept up. I have no idea about Sardinia. I doubt that they have MUTs. What I am looking forward to is the team time trial for the Giro that will be on the island of LaMaddelena where I will be living. That will be the first weekend there. Pretty good start. I go to sea within five days of reporting, but it may be something as simple as going to Gaeta (Napoli).
Ridgetop 03-27-2007, 07:29 AM Love seeing those tropical pics Bill. Funny to think that a place can have a such a gentle climate as to allow the oddball relationship between unemployment and homelessness. Still sad though. Do you have other riders from the Navy that you ride with on a regular basis? I have a couple of riders in my gov. office but they aren't into it as much as myself.

I get to work at 0530. There are alot of Navy guys who commute to work, but they start their day later. If I work late, I get to see many commuters in the afternoon. Not worth working late though. In the past 2.5 years that I have been commuting here, several people have started commuting as well. IME, most people don't know how simple it is. Oahu has a MUT that runs from Aloha Stadium to Waipahu. If you live on the west side like I do, you can miss the dangerous roads using the MUT. I see more and more blinkies every morning, some I catch, some I don't.

Great shots, bigbill. I always enjoy seeing pictures of Hawaii. Those cars in the junkyard don't look junk to me, they look pretty good. How much longer are you staying in HI? I am going to be in Mililani for a few weeks this summer. Does this MUT (or another) go there? I was thinking about renting a bike and riding from Mililani to Waikiki, is that possible?
P.S. Can you send me a Zippy's Zip Pack please? :p

I transferring to Italy soon. I will fly away to Rome on May 7th and not set foot in the US until sometime around Thanksgiving. Riding from Mililani to Waikiki would be pretty rough. Actually coming back would be the rough part. Riding from Mililani opens up good possibilities for rides on the North Shore. Alot of the Kam highway has been repaved so it is not as terrifying as it once was. The Bike Shop downtown on King street has decent rental bikes. Specialized road bikes with 105 equipment and triple cranksets. Just bring your shoes and helmet. They even include a bag with tools and a tube.
As far as Zippy's, I just go there for the bakery when I need a malasada fix.
