Phys...here is their question and answer. http://www.softride.com/faq.asp

If your wondering and many do...they are legal for MOST people in MOST tris.

Used to see them more often than I do today at races, but I can always count on some of them passing me during an event.

Great in the flats, bad in the hills. I had a friend who did RAAM and she switched between a Softride for the flats and a Cannondale for the hills.

I think you could save some money and have a better setup with bar end shifters (like in the top picture) instead of the STI levers in the lower picture.

i own one. it sucks in the hills if you do not have a right pedal stroke. the bobbing is not that evident with the straight bar softride. oh yeah, did i mention it's HEAVY. mine with 9 speed dura and run of the mill parts weigh 20.xx lbs

That second picture, the one with the saddle bag, made me laugh. I dunno, something about seeing that little bag dangling off the end of a diving board toptube reminds me of...hmm...Tom Sawyer running away from home with all his earthly belongings tied up in a bandana on the end of a stick, maybe.

I've always been intriged by them. The bike will certainly force you to clean up your pedalstroke!

20 lbs is not that bad, especially if you are using run of the mill parts. I saw an old guy (65-70yrs) at the top of Mt Diablo on one and he said it made the difference between being able to ride and not, due to his back condition (undisclosed to me.) For the record that's a 3800 ft climb and the last section is brutally steep for 200 yards (If you get off your bike there, you can't get back on.) He didn't seem to have any problem on that section.

Don't be discouraged by these guys. Don't use sti's on bull horns though. Really lame look and too expensive compared to standard Tri Set up.

In amateur cycling events you can race beam bikes. It's UCI events that make these bikes illegal. There is a guy who races a softride in criteriums in this area. Does okay too.

on the site they say that these bikes are faster than cervelo and trek and any other builder. thtas becasue cervelo builds legal bikes, you caqnt race these soft rides in UCI races. cervelo did make a beam bike, their first bike ever actually.

UCI rules don't matter to me....I would only be using this bike for Tri's:idea:

My advice.......

test ride one for an hour or so........see if your pedal stroke is smooth enough. I rode one once, and I have a pretty smooth stroke, I thought I was going to get seasick from the bobbing. It wasn't evident to me until I got settled and tried to hammer.

Standing up and pedlaing on this bike was...weird, the weight is in all the wrong places.

They also are more expensive than other tri bikes.

& Heavier.

YMMV

If you understood UCI and USCF racing, you wouldn't be so quick to say that. Almost all races outside the U.S. are run under UCI equipment regulations. In the U.S., USCF equipment regulations apply, but even then, UCI compliance is required for National Championships (including Juniors and Masters) as well as record attempts. In addition to myself, I know about 20 people who must have equipment meeting UCI requirements. Oops, starting next year for National Championships)

im just saying that soft ride cant compare their frames to cervelo and trek. cervelo could easily beat soft ride in the aero department , if they felt like it.

I owned and rode a Solo for several years. I liked the bike quite a bit. Never understood the rap they got for bobbing. Absolutely never noticed it, even during seated climbing. Maybe those that complain have a beam that's too soft for them. I've always been able to pedal circles so that probably has something to do with it. I eventually sold it to my bro-in-law who also likes it.

It can be equipped to be reasonably light but will never challenge even the 17lb. mark. They can definitely be brought in under 20lbs, easily, especially the Wing. As far as Cervelo building a more aero bike, it's really a moot point. The bike frame may contribute 5% to overall aerodynamics. Rider position, helmet, aero bars, wheels etc. are 95%. The contribution of the frame to overall aerodynamics is negligible.

Negligible is in the eye of the beholder. The difference between two aero frames (position and all other equipment equal) can be around 20 seconds over a 40K TT. There are a lot of people who would find such a difference very significant. http://home.earthlink.net/~acoggan/whichisfasterthecervelop2torthejavelinarcole/

My bro-in-law has one that I've put about 200 miles on. Once you get used to the bike (and assuming you can pedal without the bouncing) they can definately be more comfortable over a long distance. It would be a low priority for me though.

The local dealer here in OKC said something today about them going out of business two or three months ago. Anybody know if this is true or not?

Then you will be glad you bought a Cervelo

I love mine and looking at getting the FasTT since these bikes are no longer produced.

The components have been replaced entirely with 7803 DuraAce Triples + 12/27 cassette. The hills are no longer a problem with a 26lbs bike (most of the extra weight are in the aerospoke wheels with puncture resistant tubes.

Are those matching jersey's, gloves, helmets, and even toe covers I see in the truck bed? That must be the Hottness. I have to see that uniform in action, got any action shots of the goods in use?

Yes, I have matching socks too as well for both bikes.

And sunglasses.

Yes, I even procure and had my $300 Oakley Juliets powder coated yellow to match the bike.

Here are them prior:

I used one for the last couple years for local TTs
never noticed much bob at all. A little on hills but not much. MOre just disliked the TT bar forward position for climbing.

just sold mine for a song at veloswap.
you might want to contact CU's cycling team. They had 2 for sale and i think still had them after the swap was over.

sold mine mainly due to moving and not going to do the TT series next year, and got married so had to part with a couple old bikes to justify my new boing boing

with a Softride. Her average speed is up by 4 mph on the flats, 2 mph on hills. Maybe it's because the beam is on the stoker end of a tandem...:)

Yeah, and the wing on that RX-7 can serve as the podium itself. What's that for? Lemme guess...to keep the back end from getting squirly when you get it up around 300 km/h?

I have had a valid UCI race license here in Canada for the past year, also some friends of mine have gone to junior worlds in mexico and next year in south Africa. You might want to watch what you say because some people do have friends who are elite cyclists and do race in a country is is under UCI regulations.
