Hi all,

I have new shoes and eggbeaters. I was out riding today and they started squeaking after awhile. I am pretty sure that it is between the cleat and pedal, not the pedal and crank. I felt like I was being chased by a flock of birds. What should I do about this?

Also, any care tips for the 'beaters?

Check to see if it's your shoes themselves squeaking or the cleat/shoe contact.

Are they brand new? If they are, it might just be your shoes or something easy, as mentioned. Be sure the pedals are installed tightly in the cranks! You could spray a bit of lube on the pedal in case it's the spring or something rubbing as you pedal. If the pedals are used or old they may be a bit dry and need to be disassembled and lubed. Mine have gotten really loud sometimes when I neglect them. It's real easy to lube them.

Use a flat screwdriver to remove the end cap. Use an 8mm socket to remove the nut on the end of the spindle (put the 8mm allen wrench in the other end to hold the pedal). Pull the body off and wipe all the old grease out however you can. Smoosh a bunch of grease in to the body and put it back on. Put the 8mm nut back on, and then the end cap. When you reinstall the end cap you sometimes you have to be careful to poke the little rubber seal in so it doesn't get mangled as you tighten the end cap. Get that end cap tight and check it from time to time- it can loosen as you ride.

You'll want to keep a rag handy for the first few rides because the grease will spooge out as you ride the first few times.

Hope this helps.

OK, I went out again today and it seems to be the link between the cleat and shoe. I tightened the cleats up before I went out, but they still squeak. For example, when I wiggle my foot back and forth you hear it.

Maybe they are just new and need to be broken in, or I could put a daub of greese on the cleat.

I have been having the same problem. There's nothing more annoying then a noising bike.
Anyway, what I did to resolve this was to remove part of the tread on the shoe. The insdie tread actually touches the pedal spindle. I used a roto zip tool, but an xacto knife would do the trick as well:mad2: .
