View Full Version : Windsor Carrera of Schwinn Le Tour for SS?
shades9323 04-30-2007, 08:08 AM Which bike should I get to converst into a SS? Windsor Carrera or Schwinn Le Tour? The Windsor would require a strip down(and a bit of surface rust and repaint and has bar end shifters and is Made In Mexico(any problems with that?). Schwinn(chicago) would be a little more expensive, but clean paint and has shifters by the stem.

logansites 04-30-2007, 08:12 AM Why wouldnt you just buy a SS bike instead of paying for all the parts youre going to take off anyway?

1. I like to tinker with things and building up a bike is a good learning experience
2. I can buy the windsor for $10-15 or the Le Tour for $30-40. Both are much cheaper than buying a SS bike. I can sell parts off of them for a little bit making the bike even cheaper.

If they aren't exactly horiz they are darn close(on both bikes).

Ha, if I was single I would.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a early 70's Italian bike to restore(geared) and my wife has graciously allowed me to get another to go ss. So, I am not going to push my luck, yet...
warmseth 04-30-2007, 09:59 AM i don't know anything about the windsor (seen 'em but never ridden one) but i own a le tour and love it. it is my town beater and the thing soaks up bumps like crazy and is just ugly enough to not get too noticed but good enough looking to still make me like it. i like the lugged look of it. only down side i say to the le tour is that the handling it relatively sluggish. all turns feel a bit lazy and when you get up and really crank on it you can feel it flex a bit underneath you. but it is that laziness that is somewhat helping with the relaxed feeling. it is just the most comfortable bike to ride.
gotta love them goofy "computerized" graphics

but it sounds like with the windsor you will make $: buy for 10-15, sell all other parts, have money in pocket, buy flowers for wife... simple

I doubt I could pull the cash to buy the flowers it is going to take to obtain another bike.:p
racerx 04-30-2007, 03:49 PM Come on, the Windsor has history...Regardless of the actual model, a Windsor has the sound of romance...days when the HOUR was sought after with heart and soul, not fancy tubes and disc wheels....
Think of the legendary bikes out there, Merckx, Pinarello, Masi...Windsor was right there with them....
Man, I gotta focus my energy somewhere else...
FatTireFred 04-30-2007, 04:43 PM someone saying, "hey did you get that from bikesdirect?"

It doesn't even say Windsor on it. Just Carrera. It could be our little secret.
Maybe I will get both if I can get a good deal and throw one on the trainer!
shades9323 05-01-2007, 12:02 PM Well for now they are both out. The guy was finally home when I went by and said he sold the Windsor and the guy was picking it up later today. If only the guy had been home the couple other times I went by!:mad2: Hopefully the guy doesn't show.
As of right now, he wants too much for the Schwinn. I ride by his house a lot. I'll try to work on the price some as the spring goes by.
warmseth 05-01-2007, 12:32 PM i paid 20 for my le tour frame
