I have a custom wheelset on order from a respected wheel builder. It's been a month since I made my deposit/payment but I'm still waiting for the wheels. So, how long did you wait until you received your custom wheels?

For my mtb I waited ~2-3 weeks, which is what I was told upfront it would take. I'm still waiting on my road wheels, 3+ weeks. I was initially told it would take ~4+ weeks, and I've already been informed upfront there may be a delay while waiting for some parts from the distributor.

If you are concerned and it has been longer or near what you were promised, call or email them. Sometimes the wait can feel like forever, especially when you want to ride on your new parts. There's still lots of summer left...:)

Depends on the builder. I waited almost a couple of months. A lot of builders are one man operations. One in particular, is swamped right now as his services are in great demand.

Thanks for the reply Jack. I was expecting them last week. I've emailed, called and PM'd but unable to get a response or update for the last week. I had to buy a cheap set of Mavic Aksium wheels to get my new Orca built up.

The Aksium will go on craigslist or be used on a trainer once the custom wheels arrive. I would have taken the wheels off of my '04 Orca but need to continue training for a Giro biking trip in the Dolomites later this month. Plus, the girlfriend and I are doing the wine country century this Saturday.

Anyway, I just wanted to get a sense of how long people have waited for their custom wheels.

I waited over a month for my Joe Young wheels. I wanted PW hubs and he was having a hard time getting them. Well worth the wait. This is also their busy time of year.

A local shop built a set of wheels for me in about 2 hours. If the parts available, it doesn't take long in the right hands. Those 2 hour wheels are still perfectly true and haven't been touched with a spoke wrench.

It also depends on the time of the year. Right now is the worst time to try and get some custom wheels. Huge demand. Ive waited a while now for my set and hope they arrive today etc.

Getting the parts seems to be the large issue and not just for any specific builders, I see shortage all over the place right now. And then there is a queue and that queue gets bigger and bigger the longer they have to wait for parts.

Supply and demand, maybe we need to hit up the hub makers to make more hubs ;)

Late spring is the busiest time of the year for all things cycling. Races fill up more quickly, prices go up, etc. It's all about market timing. Last November I bought a used wheelset for $350. Two weeks ago I sold it for $650. Not bragging, just providing anecdotal info.

I've ordered from both Dave's Wheels and Joe Young. Each was about 2.5 weeks. Dave built a mtn. bike wheelset and Joe built my crit wheelset. Great results from both. Infact, I haven't touched a spoke wrench to my crit wheelset at all. DT240S DT R1.1 rims, DT super comp spokes 28 2X fr 32 3X rear. Freaking bomb proof.

We seem to be a bit less backed up than some of the other wheel builders. We are turning out wheels in 2-3 weeks depending on availability of the parts selected.
