Hey Everyone,

I just started out biking again after a long layoff. I have been lurking here for a couple of months trying to learn as much as I can from all you experts.

I started looking for a road bike I can take on long rides comfortably as well as for training for future triathalons. After reading a ton of reviews, I looked at trek 1500's, Alez elite, Lemond versaille and trek 2100.

My LBS just rolled out a 2005 full Ultegra 2100 in a kinda wine color that looks pretty nice. I could'nt really find a picture of it on the TREK site. All the 2005 are in white and red.
They want $1100.00 for it. The price is comprable to a new Allez with 105 group $1299 or a 1500 with all 105 at $950.00

The 2100 just seems like the better buy. I have riden them all and they all feel about the same to me. The 2100 of course has alittle better ride with the carbon forks and seat stay.
I am going on the assumption that when I get any bike, I 'll have to get fitted better and assume the bike will feel even better.

So, is a 2005 2100 for $1100 a pretty decent buy? Or am I blinded by the better set up Lemond is the nicest, but for way more than I want to spend.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I assume that 2005 is used? If so how many thousands of miles on it?

If it is new, why has it been sitting around the shop for so long?

My wife's 2005 2100 is red and white, but it's not "full Ultegra." Only the rear der. is Ultegra, the rest is 105 including the cassette. The crank/BB was B0ntrager (anodized dogsh1t) now Ultegra.

Don't get too wrapped up over the "plush" carbon seat stays. Get the bike that fits you the best and handles well. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, today I went out looking again and came across a sweet 2006 2200 all ultegra except the FD which is 105. They came down to $1099 out the door! I was not able to ride due to it raining here, but the LBS gave me a quick fit and promised a full fitting, about an hour-hour and a half if and when I was interested in buying it.

This seems like the best deal I have come across in the 2 months I have been looking. Any thoughts on the 2200?

Once again, thanks for any replies.

Depending on the year 2100=2200=2300.

I had a 2004 2300 frameset, I believe this buildup became the 2200 later, and then finally is now sold as 2100.

The frames/forks are the same IIRC. Mine was a Bontrager Race Lite I think?

It is a tough bike, very stiff & strong, and it handled very well as a result. Mine never really fit terribly well but when I did have it dialed in well I still never thought it was a particularly comfortable bike. In that aspect I really doubt the carbon seatstays do anything positive, especially considering they are huge and straight.

I crashed mine twice in races and it didn't break. One was a lowside over wet railroad tracks, one was OTB in a 10+ rider pileup. However I never really trusted the bike was perfectly straight after that.

The rear end of mine creaked too, which had nothing to do with the crashes. If you took the rear wheel out and squeezed the dropouts together you would hear something creak either in the carbon or the joint up by the seat. It never effected the ride or made the bike feel any less stiff though. You might want to check this on the one you're looking at before you buy it though.

Just bought a 2006 Trek 2100 and love it. It's a sweet ride for the price ($1,350 new), but it was all about the fit for me. Rode 6-7 other bikes and there was no comparison.

Plan to slowly upgrade components...

9 or 10 speed. As I recall, the 2100's and 2200's transitioned from 9 to 10 during the '06 model year and prices went up. 9 is more than adequate, especially if it's a triple. And it's an American made frame (if that means anything to you.)

By the way, the 2005 "wine" colored 2100's were WSD's.
