Just saw it tonight and really enjoyed it, read the book awhile back and liked it too. Would have liked more info on the technical details and training, but since the movie is intended for a general audience the way it was done makes sense. Anyway, well worth seeing and FWIW there is a blog entry/review by a cyclist at http://www.agilemanagement.net/Articles/Weblog/Heroes1GraemeObree.html

I saw the movie this past weekend with my wife and we both enjoyed it. I plan to read Obree's book as soon as Amazon delivers it.

Cool. I can't wait to see it. Do you think it will have mass appeal?

I don't know about mass appeal, but I think many people with no interest in cycling would enjoy it, though they might not realize what an amazing achievement it was for an unknown rider to break the hour record. It is an "art house" type of movie and that is where it is playing where I live...
If you miss it in theaters, it'll be on DVD around September.

Its in general release right now, but I wouldn't give it past Thursday. On Sunday, I was the only one in the theater. Good movie. Well worth seeing.

It'll be out to DVD in a month.
The movie was awful. Absolutely awful. Four of us went to see it on opening night. Total number of tickets sold on opening night for our showing: 4. The ending was especially unsatisfying. I know it's a true story so the script is limited... but they really could have done a much better job.
My reaction when the credits rolled was, "That's IT!!?!?!"

The movie was awful. Absolutely awful. I'm sorry to hear this. I read the book a couple of years ago and it was very good. Bummer that the movie didn't live up to the book. Still and all, there aren't a lot of cycling movies so even if it stinks, I'm still gonna netflix the DVD when it comes out. I mean, heck I'm so desperate I even watched Pedal.

I hear ya... I rented 2 Seconds. I don't recommend it. It was so bad I couldn't even finish watching it!
The movie The Flying Scotsman basically culminates with his world record and olympic victories. They throw in some things about his childhood which are not explained AT ALL. His manic depression is treated very lightly. I don't even think the word "depression" is used. All the character says is something like, "I get really down sometimes." and that's the end of that. Then there's about 25 minutes of watching his face head-on, all splotchy and red, sweating profusely, while he attempts to break another record.
Basically, if you didn't already know the story, you'll be confused to hell. If you did, you'll be bored to tears. Oh hell, maybe you'll be bored to tears either way.

That's really disappointing because one of my family is bipolar and we were thinking, "Cycling + manic depression: something for everyone!"
