I assume that the metals have different melting points, for one thing, and I doubt if the welds would bond. The usual methods of joining different types of tubing (eg, carbon and titanium) are lugs and adhesives. BBJ 05-08-2007, 09:57 AM Is it possible to tig weld a frame with aluminum and steel tubes? No. It would have to be lugged and bonded like the Raleigh Technium, which had an aluminum front triangle and a steel rear triangle. Cyjal 05-08-2007, 09:59 AM Tig's none too likely, very different melting points for steel and aluminum. Might be able to spin weld or something like that which allows welding of unalike metals... If you really have to a lug and brazing/epoxy would be your best bet. BBJ 05-08-2007, 10:20 AM Tig's none too likely, very different melting points for steel and aluminum. It would have to be bonded lugs. laffeaux 05-09-2007, 09:13 AM Nope, not possible to weld it. However, frames have been built out of aluminum and Crmo in the past (especially in the mountain bike world). Fisher, Bontrager, Mantis, and likely others, created frames with aluminum front triangles, and Crmo rears. The traingles where bonded, bolted, or both to each other. |
