View Full Version : Nice Rack!
Andy M-S 05-10-2007, 12:04 PM No, not that.
Not that, either.
This was the bike rack outside work today. I'd say nice weather and $3 gasoline are doing the trick. Not shown is a Novarra that was locked to a nearby sign.
This rack tells me that close to 10% of employees rode to work this morning. Not bad.
The World Bank (which is right around the corner from here) had bike racks for hundreds of bikes. An amazing number of them are used year-round.
Downstairs here we have 2 bike cages that overflow this time of the year. In the winter there are are still several brave bike commuters.

I'm lucky to be able to bring my bike into my office. For those who have to rack it, do you always pull everything off, like the bag, lights, etc., so that they won't get stolen?

My bike is lonely. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only bike in the building during the work day. But, it should not complain too much -- it has its own office with a window.
Farmertan 05-10-2007, 03:41 PM There've been tons of bike commuters on the roads this week. For the past three years, I've been the only one in my building riding. Just yesterday, however, everyone was telling me there was someone else who showed up about an hour later than me on a bike.
So is it the $3/gal gasoline or the weather? I guess only time (and bad weather) will tell.
tarwheel2 05-11-2007, 03:52 AM I haven't noticed an increase in bike commuters where I live, but it is Suburbia, USA, with no bike paths or lanes. However, the rising cost of gas is definitely one of the reasons why I finally decided to start bike commuting. Between bike commuting 1-3 days/week, and carpooling 2 days a week, I'm driving my truck to work only a fews days a week now -- this week only once. Hopefully as more biking pioneers hit the roads it will have a snowballing effect and more and more commuters will try it. Yes, I'm a dreamer.

I generally leave my saddlebag, pump, and computer on the bike (mine is the Kogswell in the front in the photo). Lighting is integrated (the rear light/reflector is bolted to the fender, and the front light is bolted on and powered from the dynohub, so...). Set up this way, I can just grab the bike and go or (alternatively) slap on the panniers and go.
JohnnyTooBad 05-11-2007, 10:51 AM Nice
I'm in a 12 story corporate building that sits across the street from a paved bike path and has bike lockers (they are soooo cool!) in the garage and shower/locker facilities on the 1st floor. I came in late today (11:00am), and am the only one using any of the 10 lockers we have available! There are only one or two other people who ride thier bike to this office, and only 1-2 days/week. I think we need gas to hit $8/gal to make a difference here.
