I am about to tape my new rims and I just want to make sure there isn't anything special I'm missing. I can't remember if I had to tape my Mavic MA40's or not (c.1988). Cover the holes, don't overlap at the ends, and keep it center... is that all I need to know? Thanks for the help with this very simple task.

And get the right width tape for your rims.

Use vinyl instead of cloth tape.
