The set-up: 2005 Campy Centaur triple group w/13-26 cassette & Chorus Shifters. About 3500 miles on the group.

The problem: One click moves the chain two cogs on rear cassette.

The odd part: It only will do this between two particular cogs although, which two will change after I adjust the cable tension. Otherwise one click moves the chain one cog. I usually end up with one extra click when I get to the largest cog. The reverse happens when shifting down to smaller cogs, but no extra click at the end. I have tried resetting the cable by shifting the thumb shifter all the way down and reattaching the cable, but got the same result.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this before I bring it into the LBS?

The cable prob stretched or needs to be replaced. Put the chain in the big ring in front and the small cog in the rear. Let out all the slack on your down tube adj screw. Loosen the rear der cable fixing bolt and pull in the excess slack and retighten. Adj the cable tension so it will shift over to the next cog with no hesitation, fine tune on a ride. Sounds like you already did this by going back over your post, try a new cable....3500 miles, maybe time for a new chain (?) Could be your cassette also, I get different mileage out of cassettes...I'd start with the new cable first, then chain, then cassette...my driveline life depends on how fanatic I am about maintenance..

Is the cable connected to the RD correctly? Correct side of the bolt? - TF

Assuming you're confident that you've got things set up and adjusted properly, the first step is to clean and lube the cable, and probably give the shifter a shot of lube while working it through the gears. If neither of these fixes it, then you may have a frayed cable with a strand catching on the casing somewhere and so need to replace the cables. Also, take a look at the BB cable guide to make sure it is still in good shape and not gummed up.

Thanks TT. You were correct in suggesting that the cable was on the wrong side of the binder bolt. I assumed that it went in front of the top binder clamp finger as it would be more secure, but now know it goes behind along the groove.

I did end up taking it to my LBS where they spend about 15 minutes trying to adjust it before the mechanic working on it called the more experienced guy over to have a look. He played with it for a minute before suggesting that the cable was on the wrong side. I rerouted it when I got home and within 2 minutes had it working perfectly. I didn't even need to make any adjustments. I must also add that I offered to pay for the mechanic's time and they said to forget about it. Plus one for the LBS.
