Guys, I am going to break down my Mavic K's SL rear hub this week and clean it out. What do you guys suggest for a lube when putting everything back together? Mineral oil? C-40?

Jim the Giant rider 05-13-2007, 04:02 PM I was told by the owner of my LBS (who I respect very much) to go to the drug store and get some mineral oil. I bought the smallest bottle and after doing it - I think it maybe a lifetime supply. curlybike 05-13-2007, 05:09 PM Mavic freehubs have a history of getting draggy with an oil that is not real fine and thin. I think that I would try sewing machine oil in the feehub, as it has little tendency to gum and thicken Kerry Irons 05-13-2007, 05:16 PM Guys, I am going to break down my Mavic K's SL rear hub this week and clean it out. I often wonder if MAVIC's recommendation for mineral oil is not some sort of translation problem from French to English. It wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened :) Any quality oil will work fine. Even a light weight grease will do, if you like things a little quieter. rdbike 05-13-2007, 06:13 PM Kerry, I was kind of thinking the same thing...it not like its a space shuttle part. I will stay light weight. pkgdave9144 05-13-2007, 06:21 PM Yep... I just drop in a few drops of oily type chain lube. The mavic pawl system isnt very finicky, and the bushing in the freehub just needs to be kept clean and slippery. wim 05-13-2007, 06:22 PM Mavic's use of the term "mineral oil" is the kind of translation error often made by translators who know the target language, but lack intimate knowledge of a country in which it is spoken. "Huile minérale" means oil derived from petroleum, as opposed to oil derived from plants. The English term "mineral oil" has the same technical meaning, so the translation is correct in a strict technical sense. However, the translator didn't know that almost all North American consumers associate the term "mineral oil" with a medical product—making the "Huile minérale" to "mineral oil" translation an error (and sending quite a few people to a drugstore :D) orca24 05-14-2007, 05:07 AM I use Pedros Road Rage...it seems to work fine but my pawls seem to be a bit noisier now than when the wheels were brand new.... any ideas on how to quiet them down a bit more? thanks Kerry Irons 05-14-2007, 03:43 PM any ideas on how to quiet them down a bit more? I'm NOT recommending this, because I don't know the long-term effects, but back when STP was advertised heavily, the company sent me two cases of it. I gave away 95 cans, and the other one went went into my bikes a drop or two at a time. It really keeps those pawls from slamming down, but it's so heavy I suspect it might also interfere with full engagement. A medium-heavy oil will make things quieter, though. |
