Piepoli's brake levers? One was black and the other was silver. I don't know anything about SRAM stuff so I's be grateful if someone would explain. Thanks.

More than likely its just a funny reflection off of one of the levers.

He might be running SRAM's new shifter:

Cyclingnews talks about it here with Simoni's bike: http://www.cyclingnews.com/tech/2007/probikes/?id=simoni_saunierduval_scott

"Whether by intention or by accident, Simoni's bike was spotted at the Giro with what appeared to be a prototype set of Red shifters. As compared to Force, shift lever travel has been altered for quicker gear changes and the shift paddle itself bore a new shape. In addition, it was also hewn in carbon fiber instead of magnesium. Otherwise, 'Gibo' appeared to be running identical componentry to what can be bought by consumers."

But the pictures show that he is using the Force shifters.

I saw that and thought about posting. I'd guess it's the prototype Red level lever. He is using it on the left because it introduces trimming with Force and Rival don't have. That's my guess.

Two cables coming from the black side in that picture, and one cable coming from the silver side. Most likely he has a downtube shifter for the front derailleur, so the silver side is brake only. This is a weight-weenie thing.

I see what your talking about, and it does make sense, but is that really an issue anymore? I thought that teams even used heavier pieces on parts of the bike to keep them legal.

I don't know anything about the components he is using, but there definitely is a missing cable, and I know Lance used to do the downtube shifter thing.
