COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Former Danish cyclist Bjarne Riis admitted Friday he used performance-enhancing drugs during his 1996 Tour de France victory, and was asked by cycling's governing body to return the winner's yellow jersey.
"I have taken doping. I have taken EPO," Riis said during a televised news conference. "I have made errors and I would like to apologize.
"My jersey is at home in a cardboard box," said Riis, now manager of the CSC team. "They are welcome to come and get it. I have my memories for myself."

Technically no but Riis can voluntarly give it away.
"According to World Anti-Doping Agency rules, there is an eight-year statute of limitations on stripping titles for doping confessions. Riis won his Tour title 12 years ago and will be allowed to officially keep the victory.
"The eight-year statute of limitations has expired," UCI president Pat McQuaid told the German wire service SID. "We're not going to rewrite history now."

99.9% sure if the requirement to be Tour champ is no doping then there is no one there who qualifies.
Pablo 05-25-2007, 02:58 PM True, but lopping off the first four was just too easy. It'll probably take them a while to track down Peter.

So Armstrong's 1999 is sealed up this year? hehehe

"In relation to Riis, I believe it was mentioned at the press conference that if ASO came to him looking for the jersey, he would give it back to them. I think that ethically he should consider this and offer his jersey back."
McQuaid feels there is another way. "As regards the dilemma of who was below him, I think the way to sort that out is to declare that there was no winner of the race in 1996," he said. "I wouldn't even think of going down the classification [to pinpoint a clean winner].
"If ASO decide to do that [demand the yellow jersey back], the UCI won't object."
barbedwire 05-26-2007, 06:15 PM No where in that article did it say that Ulrich was going to be crowned the TDF champion now that Riis has admitted to EPO use.
terzo rene 05-26-2007, 07:39 PM 99.9% sure if the requirement to be Tour champ is no doping then there is no one there who qualifies. Quite an interesting list in hindsight, not only for the riders but the teams as well. Telecom, ONCE, Carrera, Banesto, Gewiss, MG, Mapei, Kelme - I wonder why none of them confessed they had organized programs when Festina got busted? ;-)
Despite every last one of those guys being juiced the racing was sure good to watch back then. I think it's about time for another blizzard in the Tour to spice things up too.
