I'm picking up a KHS CX100 tomorrow and hear that the stock wheels are seriously heavy. I have a pair of Mavic Cosmos that I can slap on the KHS.

Can you guys tell me if the Cosmos will be tough enough to handle fireroad downhills and washboard? I probably won't be doing stairs at speed, but I will be rolling off a few curbs.

I need lighter wheels because I plan to use this on some fast group road rides (Tuesday/Thursday nights around the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for you locals), after commuting from work.

Alternatively, can you suggest some fairly inexpensive and light wheels that would be tough enough?

They are OK, I know other people who have experienced problems with the rear wheel not being very durable. I have worn the bearings out in mine fairly quickly. In general, they seem to be so-so, I think a plain old Mavic box section with an Ultegra hub laced 3x by a decent wheel builder is a better bet for the same price. My Cosmos are a few years old, so maybe they are better now. In general, it seems like any decent road wheel will hold up for cross racing, the weak link tends to be the tires and a tendency for pinch flats.

You have them, use them. The rims are Open Pros and the hubs are fine with std sealed, replacable bearings. Only problem is the straight pull spokes which may just spin in you need to adjust them on the road.
