View Full Version : Bike Related Avatars?
racerx 02-03-2004, 07:26 AM I love new things. This is going to be ok afterall.
OK, J's post got me to thinking, let's start a thread to see everyone's avatar. Does yours say someting about you? your bike? or just something you like?
RacerX is derrived from the best animated show about racing. Rex Racer (aka Racer X) is Speed's older brother.
I like animee and bike racing, so I combined both interests. How about you? What's the story behind your avatar?
myette10 02-03-2004, 08:02 AM Loved this pic, which was circulated shortly after $42 of the '03 Giro. Cipo in his full mac-daddy outfit, complete with the yello tinted glasses, open shirt, sportcoat, jeans and running shoes. Classic.
terry b 02-03-2004, 08:22 AM let's see if mine works - three Ravens forming a bicycle wheel. Would make a nice tattoo.
Trogon 02-03-2004, 08:49 AM was a student of Psychology, and loved to study perception. The Necker Cube was my favorite. (albeit it's not cycling related.)
Dave Hickey 02-03-2004, 09:04 AM www.laf.org is my favorite charity.
Elefantino 02-03-2004, 09:09 AM This avatar was snapped at the top of the Col de la Ramaz during Stage 7 of last year's Tour. The subject was said to have been nodding off after stuffing himself in the party tent after the climb (14K at 7 percent) but maintains to this day that he was merely contemplating the best line for the descent.
:dancing banana would go here:
FWIW,
Mike
BowWow 02-03-2004, 09:32 AM Mine avatar is not too difficult, but my handle and signature block bears explanation - My philosophy 101 prof. (way back before electricity!) had a 1 panel cartoon of a man walking his dog. The thought balloon above the man said, "I think, therefore I am." The balloon over the dog said, "Bow wow, bow wow." Cracked me up, so I stole it!
Bocephus Jones 02-03-2004, 10:07 AM not really bike related, but Bruce Lee kicks a$$
SpecialTater 02-03-2004, 10:19 AM Tater was taken and I ride a Specialized RB so SpecialTater. Should change to SteelTater since it's all I own. Got nicked Tater in high school for reasons of general stupidity.
The avatar is self explanatory I hope. :p
Scot_Gore 02-03-2004, 10:20 AM I ride a Specialized and my name starts with an S, seemed the thing to do was combine em. I thought it should at least be bike related.
Asiago 02-03-2004, 10:20 AM No explanation needed I trust?! :)
Scot_Gore 02-03-2004, 10:24 AM Behold the power of Cheese
Dave Hickey 02-03-2004, 10:31 AM No explanation needed I trust?! :)
Does you mom and dad know you're on the computer ;)
Bulldozer 02-03-2004, 10:47 AM Self-explanatory, I guess.
MShaw 02-03-2004, 11:57 AM I love new things. This is going to be ok afterall.

hey guys,
I have an avatar that I've been using since someone posted it here as a random file. It is 100 pixels wide by 86 pixels tall.
How the heck do I resize this thing?
I've been using it pretty much everywhere BUT here with no problems...
See pic attached (I hope!)

Asiago 02-03-2004, 12:04 PM Behold the power of Cheese
You want a cow or somethin? :)
Hereford Flyer 02-03-2004, 01:01 PM That's me back in Jan 1992 1st time doing the Tough Guy challenge, Wolverhampton, UK. Crazy all terrain running race about 10+ miles long. Up to my waist in icy water. The front runners managed to get across lots of the water before the ice broke!
Mudman 02-03-2004, 01:30 PM Makes me laugh
gtscottie 02-03-2004, 01:49 PM This summs it all up for me.
SenorPedro 02-03-2004, 02:21 PM Ravenswood Vineyards in Sonoma I believe. Not bad stuff either.
Bocephus Jones 02-03-2004, 02:27 PM Ravenswood Vineyards in Sonoma I believe. Not bad stuff either.
oh yeah...the $8-9/bottle zin is nice and fruity. goes great with mexican food or pizza. for a couple $ more you get even better stuff.
SenorPedro 02-03-2004, 02:32 PM Just a pic that I took in the fall while on a ride - Thats what it looks like to a shifter.

Mike Prince 02-03-2004, 02:39 PM My stem on my primary bike...no animation, just a cool stem if there is such a thing...alright, a different stem!
SPINDAWG 02-03-2004, 02:45 PM Love the new forum!
terry b 02-03-2004, 02:59 PM I know, I "borrowed" it from their web site. One of my favorite lower priced Cabernets, and a nice logo to boot. Please don't report me.
RemingtonShowdown 02-03-2004, 03:34 PM This one's mine...anyone recognize it?
SenorPedro 02-03-2004, 04:09 PM Have you tried their Zinfandel? - The Vintner's Blend I believe. Really quite enjoyable wine for the price tag, plus they sell it at Costco so that makes it even better.
Cheers
Oops, spook too soon or read too late. Just read above.
Chooch 02-03-2004, 04:11 PM Mine is a favorite Mario memory.
TUT2222 02-03-2004, 04:23 PM My dads WW2 Marine dive bombing squadron, not bike related, just always have been proud of him, :)
Gregory Taylor 02-03-2004, 04:31 PM My dads WW2 Marine dive bombing squadron, not bike related, just always have been proud of him, :)
That is really cool. Did he fly the Dauntless? My Dad was a naval avaitor, and flew anti-sub missions in their version of the B-24. He was stationed at Jacksonville NAS in Fla. I was very proud of him too.
My Avatar is the Lance Armstrong figure that showed up on South Park.
TUT2222 02-03-2004, 05:45 PM My dad was in the rear seat. He was in both SBD's and SB2C's(Helldiver). It's kind of cool, he was awarded some medals about a year ago, that he never got while in the service, with full military regalia. He now is a volunteer at the D-Day Museum in New Orleans, and goes with some other vets to schools and other places to talk about WW2. What I think is really great, is the fact that I have a photo of him in uniform in front of an SBD, and an artist painted a picture of the original, and it is hanging in the museum. :) :)
BTW, he was in the Pacific(obviously) and flew out of Henderson field, and some others.
terry b 02-03-2004, 06:22 PM Have not tried the Zin, but will. Sam's Club carries their full line here. Have not seen any whites though - wonder if they do them.
bigrider 02-03-2004, 07:26 PM Thought I would put in my favorite bike hero. Through years of diligent studies I have translated his quote to my cycling frame of reference.
Not too imaginative but it's what came to mind at the time. My 2 bad dogs, Sasha (the black and tan one) and Zoe, the cream. Both are Shiba-Inus and are, well, shall we say, entertaining? :p
Live Steam 02-03-2004, 08:04 PM I use this one some train related sites. I had to shrink it to fit the 80x80 format.
rwbadley 02-03-2004, 08:59 PM see if it shows up...
Dad Man Walking 02-03-2004, 09:04 PM Just checking out the new forums. I cobbled up the graphic last year to make some small decals for my bike. I started keeping score after nailing three squirrels in less than one year. 2 on the road bike, one on the MTB. Each one zigged when it should have zagged and went under the wheels. Off to that big nut bowl in the sky. Didn't make me feel real good each time it happened. But squirrels are just rats with good PR, so I'm not losing a whole lot of sleep over the incidents.
Kiwi Rider 02-03-2004, 11:56 PM Is that from New Zealand, it looks like it - Well, at least the road signs :) Seams typical about the cow. Once at the School's TTT champs a team got held up because of a farmer crossing his cows! Never a shortage of manure on NZ country roads for sure.
My Avatar is self-explanatory, Fondriest Carbon Magister frame, which I am getting on Saturday :) Along with Chorus, got sick of waiting for Centaur so just going with a pre-built setup at reduced price.
Can't wait!
Kiwi Rider
striker 02-04-2004, 01:56 AM seems to work well enough...
Gregory Taylor 02-04-2004, 05:15 AM Just checking out the new forums. I cobbled up the graphic last year to make some small decals for my bike. We have a neighbor who has a bird feeder hanging from a tree on her front yard. With all of the snow recently, the feeder has been a magnet for the local squirrel population. It has been Squirrel-ageddon -- they take turns climbing up the tree and then jumping on the feeder. It wobbles around, spilling seeds. The squirrels then congregate on the ground in a feeding frenzy. They all don't get along, so there is lots of squirrel wrasslin' and squirrel car chases all around the yard. It beats TV. Of course, I'm also of the opinion that one of the highest forms of human entertainment consists of sitting out on a summer's evening with a six pack of beer and watching the electric bug zapper.
bimini 02-04-2004, 06:04 AM Thanks for removing three of them. One tried to kill me last year. Ran straight into my spokes. Unfortunate for me it was at the bottom of a high speed hill. It hit me while I was going 45 MPH and could feel my wheels flexing and it threw the bike into a high speed wobble. I recovered but the squirrel died a hero to the squirrel cause.

Kiwi Rider
Plenty of cows and cow manure on our roads too! Gotta watch that when it rains and are riding in a pack if ya know what I mean!
bimini 02-04-2004, 06:09 AM not bike related. Bimini and Island in the Bahamas or for me a state of mind.
FlybyTi 02-04-2004, 06:27 AM Man, I have to type a message?
rufus 02-04-2004, 07:07 AM this is a Mondonico 70th anniversary frame, an EL-OS with chromed head lugs. my soon to arrive Mondonico will be similar, except with triangulated seatstays rather than the monostay, no chromed lugs, but a chromed fork and rear triangle.
i was hoping to get a 75th anniversary frame, as this is the year, but Torelli and the Mondonicos haven't decided what they're going to do yet.
Juanmoretime 02-04-2004, 09:04 AM Riding my bike or relaxing on the beach, both are great!
biknben 02-04-2004, 09:07 AM Nothing to see here...move along!!!
'tis related to two bikes I own and love...
pedlfoot 02-04-2004, 09:39 AM I see it was yesterday.

Size is fine, now the darn website says the file's too big! Its a conspiracy I tell ya!
I guess it figures that a cycling-related avatar won't work on a cycling-related site...

andy02 02-04-2004, 10:29 AM same as above!
ModerateRonPruitt 02-04-2004, 10:48 AM I expect to meet fairly new women on this board, with the help of my avatar.

They don't sell it at Colorado Costcos...damm blue laws~! All you can get there is worthless 3.2% beer.
boneman 02-04-2004, 12:49 PM Great GIF that I've saved on my desktop.
PseuZQ 02-04-2004, 01:20 PM And I think it says nothing whatsoever about my personality other than I like kitschy 70s stuff.
I'll probably change it a few times.
curtybirdychopper 02-04-2004, 01:31 PM so you say zin works sometimes? i'll try it, but not optimistic. cant imagine anything but beer chasing down a burrito or case of deeyas.
oh yeah...the $8-9/bottle zin is nice and fruity. goes great with mexican food or pizza. for a couple $ more you get even better stuff.
Drone 5200 02-04-2004, 02:29 PM not very original. But what did you expect from the Drone?
Colton 02-04-2004, 02:56 PM It's not hard to tell what kind of frame material I ride on.
owmynads 02-04-2004, 03:03 PM Hmmm...endo. I've seen this plenty of times. RIGHT IN THE NADS!
-owmynads
Found this little guy in Monaco. :)
snapdragen 02-04-2004, 04:54 PM Yes, I'm riding it.
The Walrus 02-04-2004, 06:29 PM Okay, so post the bloody thing in a size that'll do us some good! How's that itty bitty pic gonna help???!?!? :) :p
Dave_Stohler 02-04-2004, 07:01 PM Have not tried the Zin, but will. Sam's Club carries their full line here. Have not seen any whites though - wonder if they do them.
Sam's club??? You trust them to know the proper way to store and handle wine????
Sheesh-you might as well just by night train.
MR_GRUMPY 02-04-2004, 07:08 PM Let's see if this works.
terry b 02-04-2004, 07:48 PM Haven't had a bad one yet, and I've partaken of a few very well thought of bottles. How they handle it is not really an issue - the store is no less controlled or uncontrolled than any liquor store. The question is how it's transported. And since it's all coming from a distributor, the transportation should be the same regardless of where it's retailed.
Dave_Stohler 02-04-2004, 09:27 PM oops!
MShaw 02-05-2004, 07:34 AM Hope this upload work OK - Here you go.

The thing's too big. The size is right, but the file's too big.
Why does it figure that the only place I can't use my cycling-related avatar is a cycling-related site??
Spunout 02-05-2004, 08:10 AM If anyone needs sizing help with their graphics to fit this board, just fire them on to me and I will fix them up for you, easy enough!

Tommasini 02-05-2004, 02:20 PM what are the best tips for sizing avitars for good clarity??
Ahhhhhhh I got it figured out now - never mind!!!!!!!!!!
almccm 02-05-2004, 02:59 PM I looked at the gif. It is set for 256 colors so it uses 8 bits per pixel. If you can rebuild it set to 16 colors it will only use 4 bits per pixel and be half as large on the disk (same size on the screen). I split the animated gif and rebuilt the individual ones to 16 color and they look fine. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to reassemble them into an animated gif. If I figure it out I'll send it to you.
Scollopini 02-05-2004, 03:12 PM Just testing to see if this one works
Spunout 02-05-2004, 03:22 PM what are the best tips for sizing avitars for good clarity??
Use the best software you have, the resampling engine is key to keeping it clear.
Don't change the perspective of your avatar, just the size. IE, don't squeeze 3:2 perspective into 1:1, crop or maintain perspective. In a resize window, choose 'maintain perspective' and set the largest axis at 80 pixels.
Save JPEGs at 100% quality, 72 dpi. If the file is too large, start reducing the JPG quality. Always keep a master, because continually saving JPGs under compression re-compresses, and you get those blotchy skies and skin tones.
Or, call someone who is good at it (I am merely an amateur).
SPINDAWG 02-05-2004, 03:49 PM just have to represent the DAWGS! The funnest 4yrs. of my life!
Scollopini 02-05-2004, 03:50 PM I noticed others had the Lance Southpark Avantar - so I've replaced it with a close up of my head set on the front verandah! Noone else will have that photo!!!
This is kinda fun!!!
Cheers,
Scollops
MShaw 02-05-2004, 04:16 PM Let's see if this one works...
I've reduced it in size, color, and still the site is having problems...
Mike
rfrancisco 02-05-2004, 07:55 PM Just testing the water :)
Major Kong 02-05-2004, 10:39 PM I hope this works. Anyway. I love IF Crown Jewel.
The Wright Brothers, of course, which led to the development of the airplane. IMHO, one of the "noblest" uses for the bicycle, ever.

Of course, I might be drunk some night and change it on a whim.
the bull 02-06-2004, 02:41 AM This is my first post over here.
Lets see how it goes.
BigFatSal 02-06-2004, 09:21 AM This one's mine...anyone recognize it?
I was recently in the Picasso museum in Paris and saw this!
Handlebars & saddle put together to form a simple, elegant, bull's head & horns sculpture.
Great avatar....
BigFatSal 02-06-2004, 09:37 AM I was recently at the Picasso museum in Paris. This is one of my favorite sculptures: simple and to the point! Handlebars & saddle positioned together to represent a bull's head and horns... Makes a nice avatar.
freezin_is_the_reason 02-06-2004, 01:34 PM I just had to try this out. I was TNRyder on the the old boards.
