Here is a 1968 Schwinn Continental I picked up from craigslist. I got it with the intentions of building up a single speed, which I may still do, but it is a bit heavier than I anticipated... there was no year listed in the ad.

Anyway, I think it looks decent enough. Amazing how well some of that chrome stands the test of time. I think other than the saddle, brakes (which are supposed to be center-pulls according to Bob Hufford's site), and possibly the bars, I think it's mostly original. The guy I bought it from said he hadn't changed the tires in over 20 years so they may even be the original tires!

Interesting from a collector's standpoint, but they don't make the best candidate for a fixie conversion. Proprietary parts and really heavy. I had one in college and I couldn't believe it was even made out of "tubing." I swear those were solid bars of steel.

I hear ya... I swear it weighs about 10 lbs more than I was expecting... I haven't put it on a scale, but I was expecting it to be about 30 lbs. I think it's a lot closer to 40 lbs. Still, unless someone local wants to buy it for $200 - which I HIGHLY doubt - I'll see if I can scrape together parts to make it a single speed. I bet just different wheels would drop close to 10 lbs.
