View Full Version : KMC X10SL chain on Campy drivetrain comments?
brewster 06-11-2007, 01:13 PM I have been considering this chain for a Chorus 10 speed drivetrain and AM Classic cassette. Looks good on paper. I've had a Wippermann stainless on for the last 3 years and it's time to replace. I'm not sure if it's the stainless steel fact of the chain, but it has chipped away at the plating on the cogs. My buddy has the nickel version and same cassette and has not had any of this flaking.
Anyway, I like the quick link concept KMC uses. They have basically the same removable link concept on the cheap single speed chains. It works fine. Curious if anybody has been using this new chain, especially on an AM Classic conversion cassette with Campy shifters.

Juanmoretime 06-11-2007, 01:19 PM The KMC works well with Campy. I've been using the X10SL for a few years. Three years is a long time on a chain. It could have chipped your cassette because the chain was shot and now the cassette may skip putting a new chain on your bike. I replace my chain at least once a year.

+3.2. I'm also using an X10SL with Campy. It's wunderbar. Me love long time.
terzo rene 06-11-2007, 06:20 PM Works great. Like it much better than wipperman.
The only issues I had with an AC cassette was with a 9sp chain which worked on standard campy 10 cassettes but not the AC. Cogs were slightly thicker so it rubbed on the adjacent cog. But no problems with 10sp chains.

You can run 9 speed chains on a campy 10 speed drivetrain? Sounds like an economical solution to me!
Why does Campy (and others) say you need a 10 speed chain?

Most 9 speed chains are 6.8mm or more in width. Campy's original 10 speed chain was 6.2mm and IT WAS TOO WIDE. It had a tendency to score adjacent cogs and was finicky as hell to adjust. Campy wisely replaced it with the 5.9mm Ultra.
That's why a lot of riders initially used the 6.05mm Shimano chains.
KMC initially sold a 6.2mm "Campy compatible" DX10/C and a 6.05mm "Shimano compatible" DX10/S. They've now superceded those with a 5.88mm DX10/SC which they claim works for both.
And I can testify from experience that the DX10/SC works beautifully on both. It's generally cheaper than a DuraAce and comes with a reuseable toolless master link. It's the chain our shop now recommends as a replacement for all our "10 speed customers," although we'll get 'em a Campy or Shimano if they insist.:D
brewster 06-12-2007, 07:48 AM Thanks for the model clarifications.....I have seen references out there to different KMC 10 speed chains and was wondering what was going on. Is the DX10/SC different than the X10SL chain, or are we talking about the same chain?
Juanmoretime, yes, three years is a long time, but this is not my only bike, so it doesn't have 3 years of mileage on it.

OK, the SL refers to the lightened version with the holes. I have (and am very happy with) the regular version in both 6.2mm version (DX10C?) and the newer DX10SC, which is narrower (5.9mm) and can be used with both Campy and Shimano (SC?).

Where do you find the dx10sc? I've searched the web w/o luck. KMC's web site doesn't mention them (at least not by that model no.).
See the SL's around lots (expensive--I'd rather buy Campy UN plus a superlink).

Nashbar. Which only has them from time to time. About $25 with discount coupon, IIRC.
Richard 06-14-2007, 07:31 AM Our shop has regularly been getting the DX10/SC from J&B for several months now. As to internet/mail-order availability, I couldn't say.
The SL chain shares the 6.05mm width with the original Shimano compatible DX10/S. It works, but the extra cost is, in my opinion, hardly worth the minimal loss of weight for an expendable item like a 10 speed chain.
