I bought this J P Weigle on eBay yesterday. It's made from Columbus EL tubing.

Below is some back ground on Peter's frames. Included is a Witcomb USA link that shows a Richard Sachs connection

As much as I'd like the keep the 8 speed Chorus group, I'm going to part it out to help pay for the frame...

I'm going to go with 8 speed Dura Ace. Yellow Regal, Cinelli Giro bars...

I'll post built up pictures in the next week or two..

But I gather you're a ShimaNO man, so that's fine! Assume you'll be switching to d/t shifters too?

Lovely frame. There's a pile of examples of his work in the Cirque Du Cyclisme galleries over on Classicrendezvous. Nice score.

How many bikes does that bring you up to now - feel free to recap!

Yes, I'm a Dura Ace guy...I'm probably more loyal to Dura Ace than I am to any frame manufacturer.. I'm going with down tube shifters.. I wouldn't have it any other way.

As for my current fleet.

In unbuilt frames, I have LOOK KG86 and LOOK KG76,

Built bikes, I have my Vitus 979, LOOK Reynolds 753, Panasonic track, Unknown Reynolds 531 track, custom fixed/single speed, and a Soma Rush..and my Bike Firdays

I'll probably be selling my Rush and one of my Bike Fridays...

Weigle's a fine builder, on par with Sachs as people with a long history in the Connecticut area know. EL was in the last great steel tube set widely used in pro racing (actually EL/OS). You're going to like the bike.

Ha ha, good find. I used to search for Weigle's on EBay but finally gave up as production's very limited, they're not resold and too many hits for Frame Saver!

eBay is a good source for customs frames. They don't demand as big of dollars as De Rosa and Masi's. I was bidding on a Masi 3V and lost out. My bid was $700 for the Masi. I searched for other steel frames and found the Weigle. I paid $970 for the complete bike.

I figure I'll get $300-400 for all the Campy parts..When it's done, I'll have a beautiful custom frame for $600-700..

The geometry is perfect for me... I can't wait

Saw the white one as well but decided not to pull the trigger although compared to Gran Criteriums of 1970's vintage, it went cheap.

I wish I had a garage but that's what happens when you live overseas. No more space in Shanghai and my EBay shipping/storage locations, in-laws and sister are near full. Saw a Pinarello Opera, not vintage but nice 2005 that went for under $700. Had to reconfirm space with the mother in-law, by the time she came back, too late.

D/A 8? Back end 130mm? Get some close up of the lug details like the fork tanges. He's good with the file!!

The white 3V was the frame. I almost won it anyway. The buyer was from Asia and the seller listed it as US auction only... He contacted me and asked if I were interested if the buyer couldn't find a US ship to address. The buyer had him ship to a family member in the US..

As for the DA 8, I honestly don't know if this frame is 126 or 130. Even if it's 126, I can use an 8 speed Dura Ace hub. The hub has beveled axle ends that allow you to fit it in either a 126 or 130 rear. The hub spreads the rear to about 128 and it works fine with an 8 speed cassette

Are you going to eBay the Campy parts? When you do send me a note. That CSI I got that was too tall had Record 8 speed. I just sold the Serotta frame on eBay and built up the Colnago Dream that came with 9 speed DA (that I just sold as well) with the Campy stuff. I REALLY like the Campy 8 speed shifters.. more than 9 speed and I like the 9 spd more than 10 spd.

Your bike was on my watch list. J.P. seems to very well respected in the framebuilder circle. About 6 months ago, I talked to a guy in NY who has built his own frames and knows Sachs and Weigle personally and asked him who he would most want to build him a frame and he said Weigle. I naively replied... "like the frame saver stuff?" I am such a newb. He directed me to a couple websites and I read up on him.

You got a real pretty bike that should make for a great ride. I hope you enjoy it.

Great bike!

Could you put me on the PM list for the Campy 8 components when you are ready to sell--I still have it in my mind to build a retro 80's racer out of the NOS Colnago '80's Super I picked up...

cheers

Hey Dave,

this is a frameset I was eyeing... are you needing any DA parts? the STI's in the pic are supposedly trashed (and 105), but the brakes and drivetrain are all DA and reportedly in good shape. Any interest in going half-seys is he sells it cheap? maybe work out a partial trade on the Chorus bits?

hey Dave,

spirito very much approves. J.P. is very much a gentleman and an artist

you have bought a bike made by the very top tier of american builders, he doesn't make many and his praises are very much unsung ... the other top builders certainly raise their glass to him.

well done, bloody well done as we aussies like to say !!!! there are few (if any) in the world able to build a better bike. he really is an artist of the greatest subtlety and finesse. and a super beaut guy too.

dura ace 8sp on that will be perfect. everything after that wen't ugly, everything before that is too ornate or expensive to use as a user or becoming limited to source for. you know what you're doing  ... d. hickey's always on the smart money list

no really ... well done :7:

Dave -- JP Weigle had several gorgeous bikes at the Cirque Du Cyclisme in early June. My friend and I both thought they were the nicest custom bikes we saw at the show. In fact, a JP Weigle won the "best in show" award at last year's Cirque. I was impressed enough to search the internet for more info, only to find that he only sells through dealers (or direct) and apparently doesn't even have a web site. Also, my friend the bike collector/snob who has about 30 bikes all nicer than my three has a JP Weigle custom on order.

I picked up this unusual frame, a CHESINI made in Verona, Italy. It's EL-OS, lugged, chromed lugs at that, and sloping geometry (sloping in the current sense, not a funny bike). The fork is an ugly unicrown fork though. I was thinking of having the frame repainted to a nice color and to match a carbon fork. There isn't a need to get new decals either as the frame is engraved. Any of you guys have experience with putting a carbon fork on an EL-OS bike? I figure it would be an improvement....???
