As the title suggests, I am wondering after how many miles are you supposed to change
your chainrings to keep the shifting running smoothly?

New chainrings are rounded on the top. If yours look pointy, it's time to change.

...made by Rohloff to check cog wear on freewheels/cassettes; I've used it on chainrings too, but that's not what it was designed for. It looks like a miniature chain whip; they're in the QBP catalog.

Hope this helps.

Good quality rings along with a chain that is kept clean and lubed can translate to many 10Ks of miles. My current Campy Record rings are pushing 60K miles. However, I've seen chainrings that due to lower quality and poor chain maintenance have lasted only 10K miles. Inspect the rings and go from there. Certainly, if you can lift your (not worn out) chain past the teeth, the ring is shot.
