View Full Version : Stop Raining Already!!!
MaddSkillz 06-28-2007, 05:45 AM If this rain doesn't stop so I can ride my bike I'm going to go nuts! My wife and I want to go for a bike ride so bad!
I'm in Oklahoma. We're breaking 100 year old rainfall records. This is nuts! If it keeps up I'm getting a kayak. :D
JENOK 06-28-2007, 05:53 AM MaddSkillz is right. We've had sooooo much rain in Oklahoma that some of the native summer grasses are drowning. I managed a short ride Sat & Sun but got rained on both times. We've had 11 inches this past week in south central OK.
alejovh1 06-28-2007, 06:05 AM riding in the rain it's normal here in oregon, there is no reason to stop! :)
Meat Foot 06-28-2007, 06:21 AM We've had 11 inches this past week in south central OK.
Up here in wet Oregon that is 1/4 the annual rainfall. Yikes, get some fenders or a barge! :D

Austin has been getting pounded too, just to the the Northwest of town it was reported someplaces got 17-19 inches plus in less than 24 hours. The local weather guy was claiming that that was a 1 in 500 year rain event.
I have given up on rides for now and am sticking to the gym. It's one with lots of cyclists so it's funny to see the spin classes so full this time of year. They are now saying some of the more dependable computer models are showing rain every day through July 13.
JENOK 06-28-2007, 06:41 AM alejovh1,
Our OK storms usually involve lightning with the rain -- and I'm not too fast.
MaddSkillz 06-28-2007, 06:42 AM Yeah, that would be strange to see the spin class so full right now.
I sure hope this stuff doesn't last until the 13th of July!
alejovh1 06-28-2007, 06:48 AM :( JENOK, I forgot about lightning and tornados
be safe out there.:(
culdeus 06-28-2007, 06:52 AM I've ridden outside maybe 50 miles in the last 3 weeks. I signed up at a gym for spin classes because there's no end in sight.

saintsfan342000 06-28-2007, 07:22 AM Hey Culdeus,
I was wondering, what do you think about where we live today...sports?
Got goodstrong?
Dave Hickey 06-28-2007, 07:34 AM DFW area too... Non stop rain... Last night I said screw it and rode for about an hour in a down pour....
Dinosaur 06-28-2007, 07:39 AM Rain sucks....the whole state of Ca is a tinderbox. Big fire ongoing in South Lake Tahoe, 220 structures lost. Mostly due to lake of rain and people not clearing their property.
I hate rain more than anything, but we could use some...things are going to get worse.
I've gotten used to the rain here in WA. It rarely really RAINS as in a downpour. It's mainly a drizzle. I find that it's actually quite refreshing when things start to heat up. It's sort of like a mister. Now when it's cold out, it can be pretty chilly. The weather lately has been pretty nice. They are forecasting for near 90's on the 4th of July. Yes! Summer is here!!!
culdeus 06-28-2007, 08:20 AM Hey Culdeus,

stay hard buddy
culdeus 06-28-2007, 08:22 AM Honest rain question. If I was to just say #### it and ride in the rain would it be stupid of me to take out my open pros which have ultegra hubs without sealed bearings? Those are my "beat up wheels" for general use.
Art853 06-28-2007, 10:15 AM Sounds like good wheels to use. Ultegra hubs don't use sealed cartridge bearings but the bearings are fairly protected and easy to service.
Riding in the rain can be fun. Especially if it is warm. It can feel peaceful and quiet with just the rain sounds.
estone2 06-28-2007, 10:25 AM Riding in the rain can be fun.
+1
Wednesday night races in the rain=Nirvana... you go flying along barely able to see anything but the wheel in front of you, killing yourself, having fun and feeling really hardcore. Unfortunately, it's also like 70 degrees then and you freeze when you stop.

your turn! we had that for the last 3 years, every month 2X normal precip this month it comes in the form of thunderstorms so you can still ride between them. Thats why I switched from MTB to road.
abiciriderback 06-28-2007, 11:49 AM Rain is part of life here in Seatle you get use to it actually we have more gray days than rain days. If it is really raining pretty good and I dont fill like cleaning bike after ride I will take out the Surly Steamroller fixed gear only takes a few seconds to clean after a rain ride.
On the bright side yeah it rains but do not have to worry about crazy Thunder storms lightning like I did in NC for 12 years.

yep raining in san antonio. off and on for the last 10 days. rode last night on the weekly 24 miler right before it started raining.
Schneiderguy 06-28-2007, 01:01 PM and I'm tired of cleaning my bike. ride, rain, clean the bike! Right now i'm trying to determine if I drive 40 miles to the Woodlands for a group training ride. Probably ride the trainer. For you who like to ride in the "rain", remember we're taking Texas rain (we'll include OK). This past week frogs had life jackets on as I rode along :-( Not fun.
Jeff in Texas 06-28-2007, 02:20 PM According to the Dallas Morning News the record amount of rainfall for June is close to being broken. The standing record set in 1928 is 11.58 inches and the running total for this month up till now is 10.85 inches. A new record has already been set, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport saw 2.54 inches of rain on Tuesday. The old record was 2.31 inches of rain set in 1928, according to the National Weather Service.
I'll ride the trainer for before I'll get out on the road with those crazy drivers in the rain. Maybe its time to buy a kayak.
We had so much rain here that the road connecting me to the southlake area I ride most often was flooded and sealed off. I would take a risk and go ahead and ride elsewhere but I hardly trust drivers in perfect driving conditions much less with nonstop rain.
Velo Vol 06-28-2007, 08:24 PM Send the rain here; we're in a drought in Tennessee. :(
reub2000 06-28-2007, 08:35 PM Wimps. I was out for a bike ride yesterday, and got cought in a rain storm. Got soaking wet, and thought it was a lot of fun.
DrSmile 06-28-2007, 10:59 PM Beat my previous average speed by almost 1 whole mph today because I was being chased home by a thunderstorm... Made for some AWESOME tailwind!
BuenosAires 06-29-2007, 06:22 AM I've been trying to ride whenever i can, last week i got caught in two huge rainstorms. Texas rain is different than what you see in Seattle. It was raining so hard it hurt. We received about 5-6 inches in about 2 hours. On my way home, there were cars pulled over on the side of the road due to street flooding. I was riding throught 12-18" water on the road. I don't mind a little shower to cool me off, but it's been crazy here the last few weeks.
Schneiderguy 06-29-2007, 10:10 AM Hey BuenosAires,
My post above was to educate this guys in the northwest that this isn't a plesant drizzle. I live in Huntsville and go to the Woodlands and ride the Woodlands Cycling Team rides some. I see that you live in Houston. Did it rain your area yesterday? I drove as far as New Waverly when it started raining again and turned around and went home :-(

Same thing happened to me last week - the water was up to my ankles in some places!
The tailwind WAS great, and I felt like a kid playing in the rain. However, after the spill I took yesterday on my way home from work - on a wet muddy wooden bridge while trying to avoid a hazard - it's doubtful that I will purposely go for a ride in a heavy torrent again anytime soon. Nothin like having skinny tires just slide out from underneath you.
Someone on a local forum referred to it as the "pucker factor". Around here latelty, I'd say that factor is pretty high!
pigpen 07-01-2007, 06:12 AM I enjoy riding in the rain.
That being said, we need rain.
Here in Birmingham AL we are in a stage 3 drought. Some surrounding towns have been forced to buy water as they are out.
We are in a limited water usage with heavy fines and cannot water lawns. Mine in dying and I cannot do anything.
Couple the lack of water to 95 plus heat we will soon be in real touble.
Reminds me, I need to get my AC fixed in my car.
Bring on the rain.
Flatandfast 07-01-2007, 04:57 PM I too am in central OK. (Edmond) I'm just as tired as you all are of the rain and am facing a serious case of burn out due to it I think. The rain always seem to come and the roads are turning to crap also! HUGE pot holes I was planning on doing the 107 mile Tour de Payne on the 4th, but I think I'm just gonna do the 66 mile due to my lack of training and fitness now. I don't want the 110 degree and the 98% humidity yet, but I'm ready for a break!!
BuenosAires 07-02-2007, 05:38 AM Looks like rain again all week.:( :mad2:
bikerkvan 07-06-2007, 01:22 PM We were escaping much of the rain (especially on weekend mornings) here in Houston, but that has PASSED. It rains every day here, usually in the afternoons. It rained all day Sunday, when I was going to get my second 30 miles in for the weekend. Then it rained on Wednesday morning--the 4th. I was going to be such a good girl and ride even though I had wine Tues. night. I got up and looked at the radar...and practically the entire lower 1/3 of Texas was covered in those colorized blobs that represent rain.
"Rain, rain, go away, come again some other day. My butt is growing, my belly too, C'mon rain, SHOOO!"
teoteoteo 07-06-2007, 01:58 PM It is nearly 5 in Austin and it hasn't rained today...woohoo. I went out for 2.5 hours this morning and actually got some sunburn. Before I left it was the first time in a few weeks it was clear on the Austin area radar scope. It was hot, humid and I loved it. Yesterday, I was poured on which felt nice but wasn't fun with motorists.
