Check the markings - should tell you exactly what you need to look for in a replacement. The numbers indicate outer and inner diameters, and bearing angles. There are different standards, but I think the Chinese manufacturers have settled in the 'Campagnolo' standard, being 45/45deg 41.8x30.5 upper, 45/45deg 51.9x40 lower

Assuming the original is the standard NECO unit, this should work.

yes the original is a neco. it has tiny ball bearings inside. does the ritchy have the same type bearings?

seems cheap is why I ask.

given that the inside diameter and the outside diameter of the bearing are the same there isn't much room to go to different size balls. maybe 1/64" or 1/32" bigger/smaller.

ok, that answers my question. I thought the better ones might have a different type bearing rather than the "ball" type.

Don't know about the NECO, but the Richey headset will be sealed cartridge bearings.
