This is my first post here. I recently completed my first sprint triathlon on a borrowed 20 year old mountain bike, so it's time to take the plunge and buy my own bike. My initial plan was to spend $500-600 on a quality used bike. However, I've had zero luck with used bikes in my area (Wash DC). I'm not comfortable purchasing online or from Craig's List as I don't know enough to not get ripped off.
Today I was browsing around REI and came across the K2 Mach 1.0. It's on sale for $589 (down from circa $750). I took it for a test ride, and it was so much nicer than what I've been riding. I guess my question is-- am I getting a good deal? Is an entry-level K2 comparable to an entry-level Cannondale, Trek, etc? Would I be better off spending another $250 to get one of the name brand bikes? I'm a sucker for a sale, so that price is hard to pass on, but I want to make a well-researched decision.
