Hello everone. I wanted to post my review here in the bike forum to get a broader view and response.
I first saw the Toni Bevilacqua at Airpark Bicycles and fell in love with it. They did not have my size so I started my search for one and found a large at Mikes Bikes. I now have sbout 350 miles on the bike and have had lots of problems that I'm going to list. I have been riding for 13 years now and avg 4000 miles a year. I also worked at Cycle Therapy building new bikes and repairing old ones.
The bike was shipped from California to Michigan and arrived in great shape. The only assembly required was to install the wheels, chain, and adjust the stem and seat/post.
After installing the wheels and chain I found the rear wheel wobbled. The rear axle was very loose and I adjusted the cone bearings and trued the wheel. The front wheel also out of true and hopped so bad that the tire would rub the fork crown.
The headset was also loose and needed tighting.
After doing a little 5 mile test ride I was looking foward to my weekend ride. I liked my first 70 mile ride but I still had a little play in the headset. Two days later when I took my bike to the shop to adjust the headset again I found both tires flat. When I removed the tires I found the shinny blue rim strip did not completely cover the spoke holes. Somehow it didnt flat on the ride. After installing new tubes and centering the rim strip I did another weekend 70 mile ride. Two days later the tires were flat again. The rims have several very small (1/32") holes off to the sides of the spoke holes that the rim strips dont even come close to covering. This time I threw away those rim strips and installed Calfie tubeless tape. No more flats but I still have a headset clunk.
I adjusted the headset tight enough that the steering is a little stiff. Now after 350 miles I cant get rid of the headset problem. When holding the front brake and rocking the bike fwd & back you can feel a clunk in the headset. I removed the stem and fork and looked at the FSA headset but dont see anything out of place.
I set an email to Mikesbikes.com and told them about my problems they contacted me about them. They told me the bike are professonally built and checked over before shipping and are surprised I've had these kinds of problems. They said they would work with me to solve my problem. When I mentioned that I would like a Chris King or Campy Record headset to fix the problem and partally compensate me for my many problems they balked.
Two days later they sent me an email that because my bike was not assembled by a bike shop that my warranty is now void. However they have agreed to send me a new FSA headset.
Really, my warranty is void because I installed two wheels and a chain. I did this work at Cycle Therapy, my LBS that I used to work at.
The bottom line, I like the bike and it looks cool, but I think I should have got the Catena or Wabi and stay far away from Mikes Bikes.
