Haha, glad you liked it. You may throw around the "green shaft of reputation" anyway you'd like.

    a) tubes don't crack.
    b) There have been a lot of tube failures recently due to manufacturing problems - they split or get a hole approximately 1" from the valve. It's a defect unrelated to anything you or a shop has done.
    c) I use 18-23 tubes in my 700x28 tires, and have for years, because they're easier to install.
After reading this thread, I'm going down this path. 18/23 in 25mm.

I've had valves go back at the base with 18/23 in 23mm tire. Old age/rot/defects. Who knows.

    Wish me luck.

Congratulations! A nearly 4.5 year old thread brought back to life. Not a record for this forum, but definitely near the top.

    Tire too big?

    The tire is too big?

700x25mm (Michelin PR4 Service Course) with 700x23mm michelin tube, mounted on Krysium Sl (~2007) in a Trek Madone 5.2 (2003?)

Heard the usual stones collecting on the new tire but lots of odd squeaking initially. The stones subsided after the initial tire preserver wore off, but still some odd minor squeaking.

Well I'd like to add that schrader valves 'do not' need the little needle pushed down to inflate, if you got pressure in excess, it will blow through the valve regardless of the little nube.

And I wanted to check out my .... reputation.

I have an older C'Dale, and a 24mm tire just BARELY fits. If I were to try fitting a 25mm tire, it would rub on at least one of my calipers, as well as the cable to the front derailleur.

What's the impact - if any - on using a smaller tube in a larger tire? Is there any reason to think the tube is going to have a shorter life expectancy? Should I swap it out for a 25mm tube right away, or just leave it alone?

And about those Presta values - other than being more Euro and "pro" looking, do they have any function advantage over a Schraeder valve? I've always found them more finicky to use and they feel more delicate. I've worried about them breaking, and then it happened last night.
Jeebus. Tubes are not that size specific. If you take one out of the box and pump air into it, you will notice that it swells up quite a bit.

The 18/23 tube is probably the same as a 23/25 "ultralight" tube, only a couple of bucks less.... Also easier to get on than a 23/25, so less likely to pinch it when you're rushing on the side of the road...

Exactly. Just as the very first response to the thread said 4 1/2 years ago, and half a dozen others repeated.
