    Front der arm rubbing tire (CX/Tiagra 4700)

    So I have this issue i'm just noticing with a Kenda Flintridge 35C and its side knobs rubbing the front der arm when in the big ring...that really sucks.

    Is there a different front der with less arm that would work with that shifter? Seems kinda big on this Tiagra 4700 series. Maybe i need to switch to older series? I really wanna be able to run tires around this size.

    yup, that's exactly why shimano ditched that long arm on newer DA groups and switched back to a normal one. It appears the other groups haven't switched back yet.

    Sorry, not sure what will work for. If we were talking Dura Ace I'm pretty sure a NEW 9100 would be the way to go.

    You might want to call Shimano about this one before spending. I'm pretty sure and old one won't be ideal but I could be wrong.

    Look at the 105 or Ultegra FD. They have shorter arms.

    Those won't work. The new 4700 group uses the same pull ratios as the 11sp groups. What Jay said about the 9100 der is accurate, it really is the only option until the new generations of 11sp roll out over the next 1-2 years. Luckily front derailleurs are cheap, and even though it's Dura Ace, it'll only cost you about $100.00.

    So what about the new FD-R8000? Think that will work with the Tiagra 4700 shifter?

    No. The newer generation Shimano shifters/derailleurs have a different actuation ratio than the older ones. When Shimano came out with their 5800/6800/9000 generation, that is when they changed the actuation ratios. 4700 was indeed part of this generation, but.......they kept the actuation ratio of the 4700 the same as their older generation shifters! So no-can-do.

    You will see this if you refer to the chart TLG included in post #5.

    Looking right at it, maybe you are reading it wrong. If what you are saying was true then the 4700 parts would line up with the older gen 10sp stuff, it clearly doesn't and in fact the 4700 series shifters are listed as ONLY being compatible with the 4700 series front derailleurs, nothing else. The 4703 may be different as the arm length is notably shorter, but I'm only speaking of the 2x setup.
    I have not tried it myself, but the guy teaching the Shimano tech class at SAC in Irvine says it will 'unofficially' work though it is not a recognized 'working' combo by Shimano, no surprise there.

    The tire is too big for your frame. The tolerances are close. All derailleurs that are bottom pull would prob rub. The arm is not the issue. The issue is the tire clearance and the type of derailleur you are using. Get a top pull derailleur or one that pulls from opposite side from the bottom if you don't want to change the frame. Do a "top pull derailleur" google search and you will figure it out.

    There is also dual pull derailleur. XT SLX and top tier have them.

    For those suggesting the Dura-Ace FD-R9100 or Ultegra FD-R8000 there's also a new 105 level that seems to have flown under the radar with the FD-5801.

    If it's based solely on that compatibility chart then I believe you're mistaken. That chart is broken down into 11-speed groups and 10-speed groups. Since the 4700 series is a 10-speed group they won't place it in the 11-speed group, regardless of actual compatibility.

    That document groups together the FD-9000, FD-6800, FD-5800, and FD-4700. That, to me, indicates they are physically inter-operable in spite of the 11-speed vs. 10-speed labeling.

    Well you could certainly try it and prove me either right or wrong.

    I believe you are incorrect on this one. When Shimano introduces a new generation, quite often the lower levels of that generation do not get the newer technology that the higher levels get whether - newer technology being 11-speed, never pull ratio, etc. Note that they left the 4000 (Tiagra series) a 10-speed. So in a sense, the 4700 is a poor man's 5700 (previous generation 105).

    Yeah, one problem though. When you look at the 4700 FD it's clearly not based off the 5700 FD design, but of the newer 5800 design.

    Forgot to mention, I have acquired a FD-R8000, will slap it on at some point to see if it works. If not, i'll buy shifter for it lol...but alas, now i gotta figure out if wanna stay with mech brakes or not (which are annoying as hell with adjustment needs).

    Just got done with the install... IT WORKS! FD-R8000 Front der works just fine with Tiagra 4700 10spd group front der shifter. And now I have proper tire clearance!

    I feel like a victim of the Shimano Revenue Model lol. "Hey lets release a shitty front der design that interferes with large tires and piss everyone off. Then we'll release a Dura-Ace fix for a year, reap in the dollars, then release the rest of the series with the fix and bank some more!!"
