On my one bike I have had FSA K-Wing non-compact bars with Shimano DA. Absolutely love them. On my new build I got the compact version looking for a shorter reach and drop and SRAM Red. Well, I could not, no matter what I tried get the SRAM hoods flat and comfortable with the compact bars. If I moved them back towards the saddle to get the top of the bar and the top of the hoods parallel the hoods are a good bit higher than the bar leaving a terrible and uncomfortable transition between the two. If I moved them forward where the transition was even, then there was an angle between the two leaving a hump in the middle.
So I swapped bars. To my surprise, the SRAM hoods worked perfectly with the non-compact bars and the shimano hoods worked great with the compact bars. Hard to figure...
Anybody else have this issue with SRAM hoods and compact FSA K-Wings? Anyone have good luck with an other compact ergo bars?
Shimano DA 7800 hoods work great on the compact and the regular version. I actually like the regular version better. The tops are wider and I like the ergonomics better. I went for the compact because I have long legs and a short torso, so like a shorter reach.
For the D/A 7900 I hear that the reach is about a centimeter longer than the 7800. A friend of mine switched from 7800 to 7900 and then had to change to a compact bar to make up for the longer reach.
Just a thought but I recently installed SRAM Force levers on an FSA Pro Wing Compact bar.. I noticed a slightly lumpy transition from hood to bar so when taping I just added a second wrap to that area. Problem solved. Worked for me..

I messed with them for a long time and could never get a good transition. I don't think even an extra wrap would help - the difference is too big.
I ride 75% of the time with my hands resting on top, just behind what would be considered on the hoods and like the transition completely flat. I have a bad shoulder, so like to keep my reach as short as possible or my shoulder really bothers me. Only ride in the drops going downhill or into a strong wind and on the hoods if in a fast paceline (which I don't do much).
