Although it does not answer the question of the country of manufacture of the links themselves, the packaging for the chains does now identify this. (Images pilfered from a related thread on WW).

These are both X10-93 chains incidentally. So either they are made in both countries, or the packaging images imply a relocation for this model of chain.

Strange that the link would be from China....but the chain would be from Taiwan. Especially for the same chain speed/design

Sorry, I only posted the back of the packaging. They are both packages of complete chains with links.

Yes, and "saving face" is way more important culturally than telling the truth. Being truthful has much less emphasis than in the USA. So they will always deny fakes, politely of course.

The pirates/fakes also benefit by not spending $ on marketing & advertising -- they piggyback off the real company.

Left is the KMC genuine one I have in stock.

Right is the one bought from Amazon.

KMC Chain Missing Link - fakes?

I found another problem with one of my KMC links. The end of the pin with the slot cut in it is too thick and it snags an adjacent cog. Functions like a tight link under the chain. I have to face it outwards from the bike to work properly. Rubbish links. Maybe there is counterfeiting going on, or the Chinese made ones are junk.

Related to counterfeiting, I bought a pair of fake Bose QC35 headphones by mistake. Won't be using PayPal again. Once they close a dispute resolution you are screwed. USPS gave me a tracking number for registered mail. Turns out that packages can't be tracked to Malaysia. PayPal closed the dispute saying that they couldn't track the package. You can't reopen a dispute or create a new one for a purchase. I'm out $300 plus $50 to ship the package back to Malaysia, which has was returned back to me. Lesson: buy from reputable/authorized suppliers only, even if it costs more.
